        Turkey

Turkey hunting will be harder again this year. Hardly any longbeards and tons of hunters!

It's always rough turkey hunting up there.

Thanks for the turkey tips! My parents live pretty much right on the grasslands and we are thinking about hunting out there.

If anyone is turkey hunting on or near the LBJ, TPWD has a few birds with radio transmitters on them, doing some research. If you shoot one of the gobblers, please call the number on the transmitter, or drop it off at the LBJ Grasslands office. They have lots of valuable data on them (GPS receiver in the transmitter), so we need to get them back. You can have the metal legband.

Also, if you see any of these birds, gobblers or hens, please report the location to the LBJ Grasslands office. They have either a single silver legband or 2 legbands, one silver and one purple. Some have legbands but no transmitter, so the only data we get from those is from visual sightings.

Possible Dispersed Camping to Hunting Areas Year Round

If you hunt in the National Forests or Grasslands of Texas with bow or gun, please be advised that the current Order which prohibited camping except in designated camping areas only from September 15th through January 15th expired on February 1, 2014. There is information suggesting that this Order will not be renewed and dispersed camping will be allowed year round, including in the hunting areas. I believe this may already be the case in Wise County. This is obviously a safety issue.

Please review this THREAD started by Damian (huntinfool) for more details and if you are concerned about this issue and would like to see the Order reinstated, please contact the Forest Supervisor and the appropriate District Ranger for the area in which you hunt. Letters, phone calls and comments need to be received as soon as possible.
