I did the same thing, but used a spring loaded license plate holder (Similar to the old jeep plates you flip down to access the fuel cap). I cut off about 3/4 of the frame and mounted the rubber flap to that. It has the flimsiness of a mud flap, but with extra give from the springs. On Amazon, that item is called "Pilot License Plate Flip Kit for Roll Pan." 😁

      Ever heard of paint?
Mine is mounted in the same spot, and has been that way for the last 16 years...

Yep... I paint everything, but holes in a fender will rust and rust bad. This is a superior option to holes in a fender. Good for you and your rusty 16 year old fender holes.

There are holes all in your trailer...Wiring & lights just to name a few...
Welds rust too. That’s why you paint.

I have had a number of boat trailer plates vanish while the trailer was parked at a boat ramp. I now pop rivet the plates in place or tack weld the mounting bolts to the nuts

Love the mud flap idea. I keep my trailers in the pasture, and the cows destroy all my LP’s.
