    I've done a good bit with mammoth but i recall it being more difficult on some earlier pieces. You need a fast and sharp bit so you don't blow out the exit hole when drilling. Tooth is much more "brittle" to drill but it's not a brittle handle when done. Some people tape their tusk before drilling...I've done that and super glued - have still have issues at times doing that. Add some micarta backing to it and you're good to go.

    Tooth - Mammoth teach have layers of dentin and enamel like our teach but they grew in layers rather than an outer core because they ground their food. When you drill and sand it, the softer layers sand quicker so you need some backing to your sanding paper to maintain equal levels of material as opposed to hand sanding only imo...
