Surprise ending to a labor-filled weekend

Four of us guys worked our tails off Friday-Sunday evening. We put out 5,000 pounds of feed, moved two stands - built two platforms, put out roughly 20 trail cameras and trimmed & cleaned shooting lanes at every stand (about 25 setups). Those two ice storms at the beginning of the year did some major damage to oak trees that our tripods/ground blinds are all setup in.

When going to fill the last feeder, we came across this guy in the middle of one of our pastures. Our plan with any/all axis for the first few years is to let them walk so we can hopefully build up somewhat of a herd. Unfortunately this guy had sustained some injuries to his face/jaw that we felt like were going to be detrimental to his health. So we made the decision to go ahead and shoot this one. We got those tenderloins out of there immediately and had those as our appetizer before our steaks! Very rarely do the tenderloins of anything make it back home

Not sure of what he "scores" but I did measure his beams and both of them were 32" long. Both brows seems to be missing some length due to either fighting or rubbing? Kind of ignorant when it comes to much of anything about Axis.

Nice deer and payoff. His brows froze on the tips when velvet.

Nice axis! I have seen a whitetail peel his entire bottom lip back hitting a fence which is what that looks like? Suckers are tough!

                    Thanks everyone!

Opening weekend of Dove Season & he was in the area of a well traveled road so him hitting a fence is likely the cause of the injury. His entire face was pretty beat up though so not 100% sure.

Nice Axis. I had to put down one just like that.

Congrats! I agree on the freeze/frost bite affecting his antlers.
