We just discovered that the compartment numbers are different each hunt. First archery hunt doesn’t match the second one. I’m guessing the gun hunts are all at least a little different. Pasture names are the same however (North Jay has always been North Jay for example).

Just finished up our 2nd day of hunting the Chap and saw eight bucks today. Only one would have met the horn restriction that the Chap puts for both archery and GDE hunters. No idea where all the doe's are, place is in serious trouble as far as Doe population goes. Two days of hunting
Sixteen bucks and 3 does is all I've seen. As of this afternoon no doe's have been shot out of 20+ hunters.

When they posted that they were not accepting standby hunters for this hunt, they stated that the reason was to limit doe harvest, and they would continue to do so over the next few years. Sounds like they got a little carried away and didn't do a good job of managing the doe harvests over the last few years.

This is the board as of this morning.
Left hand side is our hunt, right side is the total of all hunts to date.

When I went on my hunt about 3 years back, I never saw a doe in the pasture I was hunting. Driving back to check in station one evening, I saw one on the side of the road. I put out 3 cameras and out of the 4 days, only got one doe on camera. Everything else was bucks. I figured going in, I would at least have a chance at a doe. Nope!!!

The last day I was able to close the deal on a management buck & doe. Buck was aged at 6-7 years old. It dressed out at 140 lbs. When I left this afternoon only other bucks were two spikes out of all hunters. For the three days I seen 20 different bucks two were probably 140-150 class. I know they were not the same bucks because I hunted three different areas in our pasture trying to just shoot a doe. During this time I only seen total 4 doe's. Three we're a Moma doe and two yearling. I Let them walk.

If someone has pasture 9-Jay for archery I would hunt the big drainage that goes through the middle of the pasture, it's below the handicap blind on a huge sendero. There must be some good trails going across the sendero above the drainage. I sat in the blind and seen 6 different bucks go across the sendero on the opposite side as the blind. It's probably 500 yards from the blind and glassed these bucks crossing in a three hour period on a night sit.

On the north side between the field and north boundary there is a game trail funnel.
My hunting partner also got a 10 point at the other spot I marked near the draw just off the sendero but that was a 10 years ago. Hunted this pasture twice once before the big fire and one after. Found some good sheds walking around it.

According to the archery map we hunted area 21 & 22. You can see the blue handicap blind in the top left.

I hunted that about 3 years ago. There are some big mesquite trees there that I was able to get a lock on in. Hard to pick out a spot with all the trails running thru it. There is a tower blind on a sendero. Go west of that blind and where the sendero makes a bend, is where I would set up.

Thanks. Was looking at that area on the google earth . Hoping for some big mesquites, or possible live oak that’s big enough to sneak into.

I'll be in South Jay, 18 on the first archery hunt next week. Looks like that's 19 on the second archery hunt. After studying it on Google Earth, I have picked out four spots I want to take a closer look at. I don't know how old the Google Earth map is for that area but I'm hoping it looks close the what I'm seeing on the map. I'll be camping in the primitive camping area. Hope to make some new friends. Met a guy there 8 years ago and we're still good friends.

Good luck to all you lucky drawn Hunter's. At least I won't be wasting $100 of diesel driving down for a standby this year.

Last minute preparations are ongoing. I have the truck loaded down with most of my hunting and camping gear. We will be at the primitive campground.

I have a few things to finish up and I will be loaded to go Sunday night for an early departure Monday morning.

We are getting some hotter weather and a full moon, but we have a few tricks up our sleeve and have had some fellow hunters give us some good advice for our unit. Confidence is pretty high.
