Giant! I just don't agree with his belief in removing them from the bowfishing list, those things are everywhere.

Based on this website..... https://txmarspecies.tamug.edu/length-weight.cfm His length of 98 inches would make him approximately 265 lbs
Heck of a fish! |

the Fish conversion chart from inches to pounds says a 98" (8'-2") gar would average 265 lbs. still a big gar.

Hopefully GarGuy will chime in here, but that guy's commentary is such a mouth full of garbage, it ruined the video! Yes, any 8 foot gar is a trophy indeed, BUT they are FAR from scarce! I have one hanging on my wall that is 7'7" and it was 230# and all spawned out as I caught her in August. When a gar reaches the 7'+ range, they slow their length growth some and start to really increase in girth... That's when they really put on weight... Hard to tell from that video, but that one for some reason did not seem to have the girth needed to get to 300#... Also his measuring technique has a lot of "slack" in it... He "measured" it at 8'2", but sure didn't provide much real "evidence" documenting it in the video... Still, it was a great catch. But if you want to catch 'em one after the other, if you have access to the upper end of Trinity Bay and back lakes around old and lost rivers... You can wear yourself out!
I've seen those suckers in Moses Lake rolling in late August when it's hot and sticky and it seemed there were so many you could walk on 'em!! Same thing in the spring on a flood tide or when the lower Trinity is at low to moderate flood stage... Upper Trinity has literally millions of alligator gar juveniles after a wet Spring that will ultimately decimate the game fish population... |

Our biggest was 7’8”. It went 165. I don’t see an extra 6” making it 135 heavier than that.

I was on the boat with a buddy when he shot a 7’2” out of Choke. On scales it was right under 215. As stated before, that dang gar looked like it had swallowed a 30 gallon barrel it was so big around.

There was a guy on TKF years ago when it was a really active forum. He fished the Brazos mainly I think and caught so many huge gar that he was in some kind of research program for TPWD on them. Don't remember his handle but I bet there are folks here who know who I'm talking about.
Never seen one in my stretch of the Brazos, just 2-3 foot spotted gar that are still fun to catch on a bass lure. |

Tru Dat on a lot of Gar balls. Most would be shocked at how good Gar fillets are cooked on the grill. Fillets gotta be trimmed up well and soaked in ice water for at least 24 hours to get the blood out. To me it’s like a big Op. A little extra work and it’s great eating.

yeah my first thought was not 300 it was a long fish but not really big around they get really fat looking when they get real big.
they’re always bashing the bowfishermen but we were going after them as trophy fish way before most people even cared or payed any mind to them then the picture started getting around on these huge fish and then They started fishing for them and immediately started the we have to outlaw the bow guys there’s plenty of they for everybody to enjoy |

Pretty sure he caught it in the Brazos River somewhere near Richmond. He says several times in the video the word "river" and you can hear and see a train crossing over the waterway also. The fisherman is from Sugar Land as well. The water is pretty muddy like the Brazos River in that area.

My biggest came from the Trinity, near Richland-Chambers many years ago that was 7'3" @ 151#. Shot him right behind the dorsal fin and fought him for over 30 minutes in that river bend. Three of us finally got him in the boat, took him ashore so we could measure and weigh him, then rolled him back into the river. No internal organs were damaged so I'm sure he survived the encounter.

That was a biggun. I would venture to say several tbhers have gar that size and larger. Great fish but not 8ft nor 300lb.
Congrats to him. All that news hype will be great fir his business. |

I was directly involved in the sawed otolith study done by tpwd. I have also raised a bunch of them. They grow crazy fast. Females reaching 6 ft in 3 to 4 years. After that, growth in length really slows so guessing age based on length is a crap shoot. Like asking ,"how old us a 6ft man?".
We saved otoliths from a 7ft gar that aged 16 and another that aged 38. There is also some data that indicates otolith aging over states age. No doubt alligator gar can live to be very old as they gave no natural predators after one year old. They get big fast. |

yeah when TP&W started talking about gator gar restrictions the were throwing out these crazy number like a 6’ fish was 100 years old and want to do all these restriction with zero hard numbers about the gar.
and you can bet before long they will back off on the strict rules on the trinity river when the white bass and catfish guys will figure out all these gar in the river is eating all their fish lol |
