For every goof off there are probably two or more you don’t hear about that are the opposite. I’m glad you got that info from an outside source, it’s probably better than a parent’s observation, simply because he was doing what needed to be done without you being there. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding.

Agree don’t give up on him
Some mature at younger ages than others with motivation & drive while others take longer.
Just keep encouraging & guiding him
