Went on my 1st Free Range Nilgai hunt this past week just south of Harlingen. Wasn’t looking promising at 1st due to the amount green vegetation and standing water on the ranch that made it difficult to move around the ranch via vehicle & UTV. But after giving it hell for 3 straight days and just not seeing that big mature bull we were looking my guide made the decision to flip the script on them by continuing our into the night hours of the last afternoon via thermal optics & at 0234 hrs that choice paid off when we found our bull & were able to ground check him with no tracking required as he dropped in his tracks! And there was no ground shrinkage with this bull he only got bigger the closer we got. So what I thought may be an unsuccessful hunt proved me wrong thanks to the great guide I had & ended up walking away with a gold medal bull!! I guess all those shooting stars we saw during the night portion of the hunt gave me some much needed beginners luck lol!! Now I’m looking forward to getting that meat back from Hibler’s!!
