I tried to eat at Hopdoddy burger place in San Marcos Tuesday night. Stood in line 20 minutes and ordered. Told me after all was done ordering and tried to pay that they don’t take cash. I had given my daughter my only credit card that day since she only had her debit card. No way around it. I guess I could have given the people behind $20 cash to charge my meal on their CC, But I was frustrated and just walked to Chuys and had a few margaritas and chips.
Strange times we are in. When a restaurant doesn’t take USA Legal Tender as a form of payment. I get two reasons why it's a good thing for the business. 1. hard for employees to steal 2. robbers have nothing to take (except fries) and may pass it by I get one (plus) major why it is bad. 1. someone else is in control of my money what happens if the phone lines\internet are down? how do they except payments? THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE or not |

I could be wrong but I think the University of Texas is now a "no-touch" university and only expects credit card payments at all functions.

I wish they would make up their minds. Some places where I live only take cash and several that do take cards charge a fee for using them or have a purchase limit.

Drive everyone to use cards so you can be tracked. AND have your access to purchasing anything turned off if you are not a good little commie and get in line.

Lots of businesses have moved in this direction. There are valid reasons why.
- Prevents theft, even for employees - Prevents robberies as there is no cash in the register to take - No requirement to have a trusted employee or Manager go to the bank to make deposits or pay a security service to do this for you - Counterfeit bills are around - Credit/Debit transactions are faster Don't get me wrong. I always carry cash and also keep a small stash at home. When the SHTF, cash is still king. I'm also on the fence on this issue as it's a pain when a place of business won't take legal tender. Not sure how many businesses keep the means to do so, however, credit card transactions still can be processed without power/internet; by using the old imprinting method that was used back in the 80's and 90's. With that said, Hopdoddy Burger is kind of one of those trendy, liberal type of places, so it's no surprise they don't take cash. |

Took my son to Colonial last week to watch a little golf. Broke out my $20 for parking. Card only and ended up $27. Gave him a $10 to get a couple of waters. Card only at the course. Big Brother will be in charge soon.

Not completely accurate, depending on the company situation and the state of operation you can still do this. I had to look into this recently for my company because a lot of clients are requesting to pay with CC however then the fees associated with accepting such pmts eat into your markup so if you are running on low margins you need to be able to recoup those costs somewhere. Whether through negotiating a markup change or if possible passing those costs through as a fee.

My how things change! When we took cards it was clearly outlined in black and white that we were not allowed to charge more for cc. With most our sales being internet when they came out with the chip they said we were no longer protected from fraud unless we used a chip reader. That's when we said no and now use the pay apps. Much easier for us too

They have to legally take cash if your paying off a debt, which includes paying for a hamburger that was ordered by you. They may not have any change to give back, but order more stuff to get as close as you can to make up the difference.
And I really dont think its quicker paying with a card compared to paying with cash...with all the stupid questions the card reader ask during the process. Cash back, recepiet, would you like to donate, are you a club member, the amount correct, would you like a car wash today etc etc The longest part of paying with cash, is that most people working there cant count |

Yep, when's the last time you had a clerk actually count back change? For example the total is $7.25 and you pay with a $10. The clerk gives you 3 quarters and two $1 bills saying - ".75 makes $8 and $2 makes 10$" That was once considered the only proper way - now they see what the register says and hand you a wad of bills and a handful of coins leaving you to figure out if it's right. Not a big deal of course but it annoys me. (GOF!)

The majority of hospitality bar/restaurant scams are done with credit cards so the no cash policy is garbage.
You just don't hear about it because no one wants the bad PR that it's not safe to use credit cards to pay there. I think this is just another inconvenience to deal with. |

Until consumers learn to walk away and do business elsewhere or just skip the transactions all together it will just get worse. Sad how everyone has forgot what happened when COVID hit and many places lost their revenue streams. I still have places I refuse to go to because of their stance during COVID. I will spend more at a local vendor and just buy less to balance it out.

What would happen if you just left the cash as payment for the bill? I have always wondered that and wonder if it would be stealing. I mean, technically you paid the bill. Also, what would they do if a person does not have a credit card to pay with? Do they comp the meal?
People just get more and more stupid on a daily basis. Like the sign I saw in my kid's doctor office today. "Due to COVID, please do not take your shoes off when stepping on the scale". I asked if it was a joke and the nurse said that it was not a joke. Some people's kids. |

Went to a comedy show in San Antonio last winter. Card only for parking, card only for drinks and snacks. Wife had not taken all her normal purse stuff so she had to get out of line to come get my card. Before that on the way in to the event there were signs advising masks were required, had a clown at the front door holding a sign stating the same. I was disgusted before I even sat down. Once inside the event (Majestic Theater) I spied all kinds of folks walking around unmasked, imagine that. Beautiful place but with the parking fiasco and card for everything I don't think they have anything that I can't do without seeing. Wife was just as disgusted as I was. If you have ever had a card declined for no fault of yours, imagine all your funds frozen if you don't comply with all the one world ideas. I know there are pros and cons to cash and card, but once it is only one form, get ready for disaster.

I believe a “manager” would have solved the issue. Either by taking my $20 and paying it himself or just comping it. Had this been the type of restaurant where you pay after you eat instead of when you order it would have been a whole different conversation. One where I had the upper hand. I do not recall seeing signs saying credit only but then again I wasn’t looking since I knew I had cash. Several restaurants I frequent are cash only. Namely lulling city market. Or was about 8 months ago. Others have signs saying our prices reflect a 3% cash discount so if you pay with a card it up charges. |

Don't see much of this around here, but went to DFW last weekend and noticed that there were two options to pay for gas as always, cash or credit. But if I remember right credit was 3% more (is this right)! WHY would anyone want to pay more?
Credit is very good for tracking you and your lifestyle also. Last edited by BowCrazy; 06-03-2022 at 08:46 PM. |

I thought there was a lawsuit several years back over a company refusing to take cash. The court said businesses had to accept cash as payment.

Left the Schwan's man having to put nearly $300 worth of food back on the truck a couple weeks ago, when he said they no longer take cash. Crazy. And today I heard they will no longer service our area because their nearest distribution center is closing down. Wonder why.

Cash will never go away. Ironically enough, someone is always in need of transactions without a papertrail. And as long as there is corruption in government, there will be cash.
