Lots of public hunting opportunities on the other side of Houston like others have said. You may have to take what you can this year and plan for next year. You also may want to look into some good rod and reels. Fishing is dang good in these parts.

There are still deer in Sam Houston NF. There is a large bow only section. Read up on all the rules.

National forest is great hunting. Also you can check with hunt areas on standby hunting if hunters don’t show. It’s worked for me.

Welcome to Tx. As we all know the further you get away from the metropolitan for national Forests there are less hunters etc.
