Default New short action cartridge choice

Iíve got a short action donor that needs a purpose. Problem is that I canít decide what caliber to go with. Here is what I already have in a short action....223, 243, 6.5 CM. Something to keep in my is I primarily shoot suppressed. What cartridge does the green screen recommend?

Not strange at all. 7-08 is an excellent choice. 1 in 8 and 1 in 9 twists shoot 150-165 grain bullets well and with low recoil. Itís an excellent caliber. It would definitely get the nod.

7-08 AI would be my choice with an 18-22 inch barrel.

Yes I believe the 7mm-08 would work well for you for having off the shelf ammo.

No sir, in post #5 the OP stated itís a standard bolt face and he shoots factory rounds. He also mentioned he shoots suppressed which might mean that he has to have a suppressor capable of .338 bullet.

7-08. Please donít insult a straight .284 win by putting it on a short action.

I was just poking the bear
This is not a standard caliber. It was the first .338 WSM wildcat ever made. The dies were custom made for me and not available labeled as such. Mine was built on a short action Browning A-bolt and had the bolt face turned for .545 case head.

Good point. Some of the older rifles with 1 in 10 twists are very limiting.

7-08 would be my choice with 1:8 or 1:9 twist to allow shooting heavier bullets. Factory ammo available.

Is 7.62x39 a short action? Doesn’t need a long barrel, likes to be suppressed, and can buy a case of soft points for cheap (considering).

Cases wonít extract because the cartridge and bolt have 2 different size faces. The 7.62x39 (same parent case as the .220 Russian, PPC, and Grendel) requires a .4545″ bolt face. Bolt action rifles are commonly chambered in 223 (.3991″), 308 (.4861″), and magnum (.5471″) bolt face sizes.

Build you a 308 Vato! Pick you a fast twist 16Ē barrel and buy ammo (150-180grainers) anywhere..

7-08 or 338 Fed. Depending on what purpose you have in mind for it. I love the 260 as well, but you already have a Creedmoor, so it really doesn't make a ton of sense to me to build a 260. Nothin wrong with a good ol 308 either for that matter.
