Pileated woodpeckers

If Woody Woodpecker represents any woodpecker, it would be this one IMO. I caught a male parent in a feeding session with an offspring yesterday morning out behind the shop. They have been hanging around for the past few days, four of them though I have only captured 3 at one time on a pole. I believe two siblings and the parents. Anyway, a few shots.

These are great. We had one hanging around our back yard several years ago, and one showed up several months ago for only one morning.

A little luck involved in this one. They flew from a tree on the neighbor's place to behind my shop. They landed in a tree just over the fence line back there. I used the shop to shield me but I was maybe 30' from them. The adult was on the opposite side of the limb as you can tell busy hammering for food to give the young one. I think the young one spotted me but they are more forgiving, especially at feeding time.

The pileated woodpeckers are all over NWA, they love the suet blocks. We quit putting them out because the birds are destructive.

This one had chunks flying out of this live oak tree looking for food.
