Default Short. 308 idea

Hear me out.

Wanted a short 16" .308 for a suppressed scout, blind gun. All I could find was a 20" so I picked it up. It's a remington 700 sps tac 20inch.

Now I'm considering my options on cutting the barrel down and having my yhm phantom qd pinned and attached permanently. The qd is about 3 inches long.

Plan to shoot 150grains 200yds or less. Usually less

Here is a ballpark of what I'm thinking of......opinions?

Only thing to consider would be velocity if it matters. I think the shorter the better but only shooting 2475-2480fps with 168 FGMM out of a 16.5" SPS AAC with a 8" Griffin can.

If going to permanently pin then why not go shorter? Say 14-16 and suppressor break would bring to 16+?

That's how it's lined up. All approximate of course.

13inch would get me to 16 inch, 22inch total

15inch would get me to 18inch, 24inch total

Remington makes that rifle in a 16.5" as well. I know you said the 20 was all you could find but if you could live with 16.5 and you're not in a hurry I would wait til I could pick one up and then sell yours. Would likely still come out a good bit ahead in $$ than spending to have yours cut.

Yep, can't find one for a decent price. I'd also take an ugly 783 or a cva type but can't find one either.

I have the R700 16.5 aac-sd in 300 blk and a R783 16.5 in .223, all I need is the 308.

Also this rifle will be shorter as I'm using the qd to add 3inches as it will be permanent.

Pic 2 is what I would do in your spot. I have a 14" contender barrel I am going to have cut down and sbring the pistol frame to make a little suppressed .308. Barrel length will end up at 12" after cut down and will be 19" long after threading a can on it. I was planning on running 125 gr loads to get me out to 300 reliably.

If you willing to spend the $, TBAC has a pinnable direct thread and then you can cut to 10 and pin a suppressor to it. I would go shortest your break will let you as dont think you loose much and gain maneuverability.

Pic 2 is the shortest I can go. About 13inch usable barrel and the 3inch qd mount will get me to 16inches.

I don't think 2-3 inches would be worth pinnning. Either SBR it or don't. If I were that concerned about OAL vs velocity I'd be looking at 12" with direct thread, but I understand the mental debate. 1st world problems for sure... I like it!

I was in the same boat. I went 16 only because I didn’t feel like paying a dang Sbr stamp.
FYI I’m still getting 2700fps with 178s with the can on.

I agree shorter the better. Unless you want to shoot far.

I've had one gun pinned and welded, sold it and doubt I'll ever have another.
Granted, mine was an AR but it's still a PITA.
To me its either worth it to SBR it (brace it if possible) or keep it 16" (or longer).
IMO for what you're gonna use it for I don't think that little bit of extra barrel length will be too big of a burden.

Most any load I see with a 178gr Hornady pushes them at 2600-2700 with 24-26 inch barrels. What powder and charge weight are you using to get 2700fps out of a 16 inch barrel? Ever shoot that load on a hot summer day?

CFE 223 seems to be the go to powder lately to get max velocity in a short barrel .308 and not have excessive pressure. There is also Shooters World Tactical Rifle powder for less flash and made for cans also in .308
I just Chrono'd some 168's at 2825 out of a 17-3/4" Barrel on my A-bolt micro using CFE 223.

Just looked at the Hodgdon site.

They didnt have a 178gr but did show a 175 SMK using CFE 223 in the 308.

The max load shown is 47.5 grs with a velocity of 2752 at 60,400 psi.
Thats with a 8 inch longer barrel, theirs was 24

I loaded 2 strings at 48.2 and 48.5 grains.
The .3 grains of the higher load gave me right at 50 fps more velocity and also started to flatten primers pretty good but no cratering.
I would consider 48.5 a maximum safe load with CEF 223 and 165/168 grain.
My barrel has 1:12 twist. I would be very very careful loading that high with 1:10 or 1:9 twist rate.

I'm hoping for 2400ish fps out of factory. If not I'll reload if I have to.

I did the same thing with my 700PSS LTR. I couldn't get quite to 16" without getting into the flutes but it's close. Mine is a 1:12 and it still shoots lights out with cheap 165 grain Rem. Core-lokt's

Think I'm going to pic 2.

13inch, 16 with qd and 22inches total with can. I'll update as build continues. Plan on a 3-9 scope as I'm going to shoot Chip shots at 100 yds lol.

I just built a 16" carbon barrel 308 to run suppressed as my thermal rig. Most of my shots are within 300 yards with the occasional longer shot and I got tired of dragging around 14lb ARs with 24" suppressed barrels.

Just starting load development with 165gr Barnes TSX's behind Varget and RL15 and 175 Barnes LRX's behind CFE223. Unless I can break 2500-2550 with the 175's the extra weight/BC don't have any advantage over lighter bullets and I will drop back to 150's/165's.

i had a 16" sps 308 .. sold it .. it was still heavy.. and i lost a couple of pigs at 170 .. by the time you get it short enough to like it , you probably won't like the performance any more .. i'd definitely not SBR it until you're sure... pin weld may be a hard sale if you can't find a guy with the same can mounting system... but that's just me , i already been down that road and taken my losses .. to each his own though .. so good luck to you

Something to consider is baffle erosion on the shorter barrels.

Have a 16" handi rifle in 308. Definitely increases noise but it sure is compact. Its dropped a number of heavy bucks with the factory federal 150 grain fusion.

Either a sdn6 or gemtech tracker. Id put the noise level around a 22 mag. Definitely louder than a longer barrel.

It is my understanding that on quality rifle cans (17-4, stellite, etc) erosion only really starts happening once the can in hot. Meaning you get almost zero erosion on the first shot or 2.
