Baseball - Winter signings and trades.

Looks like Boston is ramping up this winter. Looks like they have shored up their pitching and also have signed Mitch Moreland a free agent from the Rangers.

I kinda figured he would end up an Astro.

Yep, they just added Sale, to go with Porcello and Price! They're definitely the team to beat in the AL east. Just gave up prospects for sale.

I hope the best for Moreland in Boston. I hope he's mentally geared up for it. Boston Red Sox fans are a different animal than Rangers fans. Hopefully he'll do well.

I really hope the Rangers find a good first baseman. I have no idea who it would be. Maybe Profar. It better not be Gallo.

Hopefully JD can find a starter and a left fielder. I think the club wants Choo to be the full time DH. Time will tell the tale.

Beltre kept Gomez focused, for the most part. One-year, $11.5 million seems about right -- he can be spectacular at times.

looks like Desmond went to the Rockies. Rangers got some revamping to do this year.

Rangers will give away the farm again for a top player.....their team is in win now mode and will be rebuilding in 2-4 years

Hence the problem. There's not that much left in the farm system. Per article in DMN yesterday, JD trying to "thread the needle" in having a playoff caliber club this year and having a contending club for years to come. Seems like a lot of holes to fill to me.

1B? Supposedly some combo of: Gallo, Profar, Rua and others
Need an outfielder.
Need pitching.
Need pitching.
Beltre' isn't getting any younger.

I hope i'm way wrong, but i don't see Gallo as a MLB player. I swear there were evenings last season when he took and 0 for fill in the blank, and his bat never touched a pitched ball. I totally agree on the 4A assessment. But we'll see...

People said the same thing about Chris Davis. Not that I don't have my own reservations about Gallo, but sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference. Davis started hitting bombs when he started doing tee work.

Could be. I think Chris Davis was never going to happen in Arlington. We'll never know. I don't think Gallo has it between the ears. Again, i hope i'm wrong. We'll begin to find out in about 3 months.

I have been wondering why the Rangers have not yet talked to Darvish about an extension. If he has a good year (and stays healthy) the free agent sweepstakes for him will be ridiculous. Knowing he will be gone next year without an extension, some have even said the Rangers should trade him now for a decent starter and some top prospects to replenish the system. I cannot see that happening since apparently Daniels thinks he can fill the holes and position the roster for a deep run in 2017.

That's exactly what it will take, I think we have the discussion after the meetings. If things don't look good then we begin shopping him. No sense in keeping him around and get nothing for him at the end of the year.

Darvish told management that he's open to extension talks. If you trade him now then you write off another valuable year of Beltre and Hamels.

Does Darvish really want to be a Ranger? He has mostly seemed aloof while he's been here. Is he healthy, coming off Tommy John surgery. if so, will he stay healthy?

What is Hamels deal? Why the tail off at the end of last year? Is he beginning to wear down?

Balance of the starting rotation?

Bullpen makeup? Trade bullpen pieces for other pieces?

Can Beltre' handle 3rd base for a full season at his age? He was mostly healthy last year. Can his legs do it again? That is one big man. How will he handle aging?

How untouchable are Odor and Mazara? I'd keep Odor pretty much no matter what.

Jamie Newberg reports that Darvish is open, even amenable to an extension, but it will be in the $30 mil a year range.

Hamels is getting older and had a lot of innings on his arm when he tailed off from having to go so late in games when the bullpen failed for the first half of the season.

Not sure exactly what will happen with the bullpen, but changes will be made just like every other year.

Beltre will play 3rd daily, getting occasional rest from Alberto/Profar/Gallo.

Odor and Mazara are pretty much untouchable unless we're going after a legitimate frontline pitcher.

After last season Gomez says that being in the Rangers' clubhouse made him a better player and person. I'm betting on a solid year.

We're in talks with the Reds for Billy Hamilton and a starter. If the trade goes through, Hamilton takes center, Gomez slides to left, Mazara stays in right, and Choo will DH.

Ok, I'd like to see more old fashioned player versatility in MLB again. Back in the day, if a pitcher could hit, he could get some ABs between starts (see George Herman Ruth). Speaking of the Rangers, have y'all seen Darvish swing the bat?! If the Profar/Gallo/Rua/et al combo doesn't pan out at 1B, put Yu over there. He even looks like a first baseman.

Or, just bring back Napoli-again.

Even though the pitching let down in the playoffs, the offense did not do the team any favors. I would be interested in rangers signing either Napoli or Encarnacian. They are still too lefty leaning. I like the idea of trading for Hamilton, he has speed but his bat is a little soft. However I think he would be a good defensive weapon for the Rangers

I'm all in on Napoli coming back. The dude is a winner everywhere he goes. I would love to see Hamilton here. He's a monster in center field and a legit weapon on the base paths.
