Savage 10T in .308, was my choice for my kids 12yro +... It is a heavy gun, but my kids have been able to handle it well. I never wanted to go light for caliber for the kids, but instead went heavy on gun weight, which translates on less recoil.. The Savage has the accutrigger which also helps the concentration of trigger/scope balance for a good shot. My first kid shot a buck at 225 yds (she already had lots of target practice) and was totally confident. She had some target practice with Hornady reduced loads also. Accuracy kills and once you can place the bullet in the vitals, it's game down.. Know your gun, know your game & know your shot placement on that particular game.. This is a question that has been asked many, many times... Good luck and thanks for taking a kid hunting!!!!
