I saw this posted on a taxidermy forum. Interesting way to add the black color to antlers mimicking tree sap and dirt. I might try this on a deer antler shed I have to see what it looks like.

I decided to save the tar technique for another project, and made a plaque from a rough cut fir 2x6 cutoff that had some bark left on it.

I put it in my huntroom above the bowrack.

Thank you, sir. It was a fun little project seeing it go from under juniper trees in a dry gully with other bones strewn around to on the wall.

              Nice job.

I get the liquid pine tar at a feed store or ranch supply. It gives a more yellowish color but has the sticky to hold dirt and bark from rubbing a stick on the antlers.
The dirt and sticks give the natural color.

The stains look much easier to use and color looks good. I just like doing them the natural way the animal would have.

I’m still considering trying to blacken them-and then I think “leave well enough alone”.

Im still working at getting one, with a rifle now.
