CFE 223 seems to be the go to powder lately to get max velocity in a short barrel .308 and not have excessive pressure. There is also Shooters World Tactical Rifle powder for less flash and made for cans also in .308
    I just Chrono'd some 168's at 2825 out of a 17-3/4" Barrel on my A-bolt micro using CFE 223.

Just looked at the Hodgdon site.

      They didn’t have a 178gr but did show a 175 SMK using CFE 223 in the 308.

The max load shown is 47.5 grs with a velocity of 2752 at 60,400 psi.
That’s with a 8 inch longer barrel, theirs was 24”

Yeah shoot it in summer too. I’m running 44.5-45gr of imr 4064. Loaded out really long in acis mags

          I loaded 2 strings at 48.2 and 48.5 grains.
The .3 grains of the higher load gave me right at 50 fps more velocity and also started to flatten primers pretty good but no cratering.
I would consider 48.5 a maximum safe load with CEF 223 and 165/168 grain.
My barrel has 1:12 twist. I would be very very careful loading that high with 1:10 or 1:9 twist rate.

I'm hoping for 2400ish fps out of factory. If not I'll reload if I have to.

I did the same thing with my 700PSS LTR. I couldn't get quite to 16" without getting into the flutes but it's close. Mine is a 1:12 and it still shoots lights out with cheap 165 grain Rem. Core-lokt's

My 16” .308 shoots pretty much anything you feed it

18inch barrel (16 absolute shortest) and run your can on that.

What sierracharlie said... Except mine is a Tikka. Had it cut/threaded 16”. It shoots far better than me.

Think I'm going to pic 2.

13inch, 16 with qd and 22inches total with can. I'll update as build continues. Plan on a 3-9 scope as I'm going to shoot Chip shots at 100 yds lol.

Anyone have a favorite load for 150 grain in 16” barrel?

                            I'd prolly go 16" barrel

I just built a 16" carbon barrel 308 to run suppressed as my thermal rig. Most of my shots are within 300 yards with the occasional longer shot and I got tired of dragging around 14lb ARs with 24" suppressed barrels.

Just starting load development with 165gr Barnes TSX's behind Varget and RL15 and 175 Barnes LRX's behind CFE223. Unless I can break 2500-2550 with the 175's the extra weight/BC don't have any advantage over lighter bullets and I will drop back to 150's/165's.

i had a 16" sps 308 .. sold it .. it was still heavy.. and i lost a couple of pigs at 170 .. by the time you get it short enough to like it , you probably won't like the performance any more .. i'd definitely not SBR it until you're sure... pin weld may be a hard sale if you can't find a guy with the same can mounting system... but that's just me , i already been down that road and taken my losses .. to each his own though .. so good luck to you
