    Wood water pipes

I figure some folks will find this interesting, and there’s probably an expert on TBH.

Our small town in Montana is doing some upgrades to the water main (metal) from the 1960s, and while they were excavating in front of the house pulled this out.

It’s a wood water main, I was told installed in the 1920s. I assume during the 1960s re-piping, they must have thrown the piece in the hole instead of carting it away,

It’s made out of wood staves and then wrapped with a thick, metal wire to band it together.

They’ll probably take it away Monday, my wife will shoot me if I asked to cut a foot long piece as a souvenir.

That's really cool Bill, thanks for sharing. I say go cut a piece off when the wife's not paying attention!

We pulled out several pieces while rehabbing utilities in Gainesville, TX.

The city that I was born in had a lot of wood gas lines that were replaced while I was growing up. Yah, I'm an old fart

Our water pipes from the well are 6’ deep and way below the frost line of about 3 feet here.

Really nice piece of history. I believe the first pipeline was a gas pipeline to Buffalo N.Y. made of wood.

Amt no way I would let it be hauled off.
