I figure some folks will find this interesting, and there’s probably an expert on TBH.
Our small town in Montana is doing some upgrades to the water main (metal) from the 1960s, and while they were excavating in front of the house pulled this out.
It’s a wood water main, I was told installed in the 1920s. I assume during the 1960s re-piping, they must have thrown the piece in the hole instead of carting it away,
It’s made out of wood staves and then wrapped with a thick, metal wire to band it together.
They’ll probably take it away Monday, my wife will shoot me if I asked to cut a foot long piece as a souvenir.
