Another question. Do you have to boil, dye and wax your traps. I have one newer 550 and a bunch of old victor double springs that my granddad gave me. I have caught small pigs in them so they are still pretty stout. They are all rust colored due to age. What are the advantages of dying and waxing. I used to trap lots of coons back in high school but never messed with coyotes and bob cats.

You can dye and wax, dip in various paint products cut with everything from coleman fuel to acetone and you can dip them in Full Metal Jacket (Zep floor wax if you want to save some money since it is the exact same thing per the labels)
Some swear by one thing and swear at the others Traps I have been using were dipped a few times in Zep's. |

Busy weekend. In addition to finishing up a welding job I put super stakes with 20” of #3 mb chain on 5 dozen traps and built five drags I’m really pleased with. I have a road that has a concrete base and you can’t drive in earth anchors.

Sharkhunter those drags turned out amazing! That’s a pile of coil springs, I think you might have been bitten by the trapping bug!

![]() I think it's just a traditional method of rust prevention. I started waxing because I bought 4 traps 2nd hand that had been waxed previously and they were much easier to set because they were lubricated by the wax. I hadn't realized that advantage previously. I assumed that waxing was just something for water sets and traps. |

How would you set traps around a carcass? How far away would you set the traps?

Flat set or scent post with urine and gland lure is what I have been told
I don't trap around a carcass much, caught one black headed buzzard the only time I tried it. Don't care about them but have hawks, eagles and even a pair of caracaras that will work carcasses at the spot I dump them in back of my place and don't want to catch any of them |

I was only able to trap about 50% of our lease due to high water. If it ever dries out enough for me to access the other half I’m going to set the whole 2k acres hopefully late summer or early fall. I’d love to take on more properties though.

Gotcha! I knew you wanted the expand to other properties. I didn't recall you not being able to trap such a large portion of your lease.

Well the local coyotes took revenge on me. Dug into our chicken coup and killed 15 chickens. Gloves are off now lol ! I haven’t trapped around the house because of so many non target animals. I have three snares in and around the coupe and two walk thru sets on the trails I found feathers on. I have to hand it to them other than a few feathers and a couple of tracks they did a professional hit job. In and out and non of my 4 biscuit eater heard a thing.

This makes #19. Got him on a compass set with
MJ widow maker, gland lure and fox and coyote urine. Different smell in each hole. MB 550 4coil full pad catch. This one was a challenge. He was a digger and always wanted to circle and not commit on dirt holes. Good blended flat set is becoming my favorite set. |

Thank you ! Yes he actually worked the set two days ago and dug at 2 of the 4 bait hole then took a dump. I left it alone and figured he was going to come back.

Well I was done for a while
Then I found fresh tracks yesterday evening (it rained hard Sunday night and Monday morning) so I got home today and made me 2 sets. Figure it is a momma looking to feed some pups chicken dinner so I made a dirt hole and about 10' away a flat set with some droppings and some urine. Looked like maybe 2 sets of tracks so maybe I can catch both of them |

I’m on day 17 trying to catch a deer killer. Early in the job I caught something that pulled out, had blood on the trap so I figured it was a coon that chewed it’s foot off. I’m starting to think it was a coyote the way they are avoiding my sets. The pair are killing deer or exotic about every third day, so the pressure is on to get them killed.

It’s been a grind but I set a goal to take 20 dogs off our place. I caught the locals and made up the last 6 or 7 with transients. Today was #20!!!

Nice work Sharkhunter. Getting coyotes killed this Time of the year really helps the fawns. Once you kill the breeding pairs the area won’t repopulate with coyotes until the pups disperse in the late summer, by that time fawns have a good chance of survival.

Thank you! Thanks what I’m counting on. I just need those fawns to get their legs under them. If we lose another full crop like last year our lease is really going to take a long time to recover.

Something got my rooster yesterday.
Have not found any evidence, just went to lock the up and no rooster on roost. He never strayed far from his harem. I need to work on my snaring skills Most likely he was bushwhacked by a coyote |
