Very old buck. Ribs and backbone showing this time of year is not good. They should be at their fattest. Does someone plan on taking him?

Most likely a snake. It seems the neck is the easiest, most common place for animals to get bit. We've had dozens of cows get bit over the years and it always swells up into a big tumor just like that.
