Collins bros. Jeeps in Dallas are specialist for future reference. Being a Levi addition some day you may want to restore as original. They are as collectible as any muscle car.

Awesome! I just dropped off a 81 CJ7 with the mechanic Monday. You are tackling a lot more than I wanted to take on myself but it will be a hell of a learning experience for him. I will definitely be following along.

            No kidding

I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, I don't gamble. We lost our lease so we didn't hunt this year. I had to find something to blow my money on. This was it!!

This is what it looked like originally. I just don’t know if I can stomach the yellow.

                LOL

I sold a 79 CJ7 with 304 power steering and brakes a few years ago.
Hate to say it but I gave away a spare grill for it like 2 weeks ago. It was fun to drive when the weather was nice but the 4 door in the drive is so much nicer.

Oh wow, that grill would have come in handy.

This wont be his daily driver or anything. Just a toy and deer lease ride

Ive been into jeeps since I bought my first one in 1981. I have a 79 now that Ive had since 91. It has a 401, T400, scout axles, lockers, winch, 40's and way too much to list.

In all that time and all those jeeps, one thing to consider is a full roll cage over the driver's area. There are weld on kits that attach to the factory roll bar. Be sure to tie it all into the frame. With all the rust you encountered, Im betting the metal under the roll bar is very thin and would not hold up in a roll over.

Im glad to see you and your son doing this, its a great bonding experience.

                    Hugh

Now this is funny, and probably good advice. Tell you son he has a following on TBH, good job.

When the pandemic started I realized that I has some time to teach my three boys life skills that I had failed to teach them up to that point. So far they know how to do taxes, balance a check book, change oil, change a tire, rotate tires, fix a toilet, fix a leaky faucet, clean a carborator, plumbing repair.

With this project he now knows how to weld using a mig welder, he can use a cutting torch, he understands the idea behind how motors work and figuring out why it might not be running. He learned the hard way that forgetting bolt the radiator back to the frame and just leaning it against the fan is an expensive mistake.

What ever it ends up costing me, I figure that it was a good investment in him.

                          Thanks Hugh,

The roll bar is actually on our list. The area around the base is in fact rusted through. We are going to take the roll bar off and reinforce that area and make it better than new. I would love to see a picture of your jeep if you have one
