Could be algae bloom. Had that happen a couple years ago. It depletes the oxygen. I used a trash pump to aerate until I could control the algae.

Unfortunately, about the only thing you can do is feed the other wildlife with them. Hides don't bring anything, and no one eats them anymore. It's predator/varmint control.
