Muzzle loader stock refinishing
I decided to try and refinish the stock on my Hawkins rifle. I found this onlinehttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...eaebc1246a.jpgand really liked that look. I used leather dye and a customized paint brushhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...1e462585bd.jpgto make the stripes then stained it with antique maple colored stainhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e8796982a1.jpgi still have to apply varnish and I'll post another picture after I finish it. I think it turned out ok but if I was to do it again I'd use black dye for the stripes and a darker stain to try and get it closer to the colors in the picture I used as a reference. What do y'all think?

Got the varnish on it and all the brass back on. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...5238d47f6b.jpgnow I've decided I'm going to strip the bluing off of the barrel and brown it, something like this http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...cd65c707c4.jpg

Finally got it all back together, the barrel is darker than I wanted it but I'm happy with it. I still need to brown the sight and the piece under the barrel that holds the ramrod, I forgot all about them until I started putting it back together http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...125ab6e0e6.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...fd663bd0f8.jpg

That looks cool, really fits the look of the rifle.

That's a cool project, the stock turned out great. What did you use to strip the blue and then "brown" it?
I used a Hoppes kit once to strip and then blue an old shot gun. It turned out OK after a lot of bluing. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk |
