    Our 2023 TPWD Experience

The hunt was a 2022 Draw Hunt.
So this past year we were drawn for a bow hunt on a 2K acre WMA, I won't name the place or the any of the parks rangers, but we had a great time even though we were not successful.
That being said it was a bow hunt and there were only two parties drawn, which ended up being 2 persons per parting. In my case it was my wife and myself. Anyway this same WMA also host a kids rifle hunt later in the season, with I think 20 permits. I asked the ranger why only 2 bow permits issued for 2K acres of property and he gave me some wildlife management answer that I really do not remember, nor did it make any sense to me.

The property had plenty of cover from border to border.
Also the ranger said he had been feeding at 3 ea. locations and we could hunt them if we could find them, but he would not tell us where they are.
The hunt was by assigned blind, but you could pic the blind if you and the other group of 2 ea was ok with it. The other group was two guys and they were easy going and no issues there.

So, from a hunters perspective why would the hunts be arranged as such.
    Advantage to the kids?

      Why not name the WMW?

I think your question should be directed at the TPWD staff who decided on that setup.

TPWD doesn't really want people on the WMA's. They want to be able to say they have public land but greatly prefer the public not actually use it. They do occasionally however have to put on events for the public and kids are easier to deal with than the typical adult male hunter. especially if they can get twenty in all one weekend.

It would not change anything and I really liked the guy. Again to be fair I do not remember all the details when I did ask about the rhyme and the reasoning of the way it was, but at the time he used a lot of wildlife biologist jargon to explain, but regardless it did not make sense.

My thought was if your bow hunting the odds of a harvest already are lower and you cap that off with significantly lower number of bow hunters than gun, the chances that you would significantly reduce the chance for the kids would be minimal.

this. and it also doesnt make sense for them to disclose theyve been feeding but not share where.

From the OP’s explanation, I’m gonna have to agree with this.

From what I have experienced, they reserve those feeding locations for the youth hunts. They want to keep the pressure off them prior to the hunt.

Also, I am sure they do like any good wildlife manager does and has allocated the number of hunts/hunters with the harvest quota the need. Sounds like youth hunts are their main avenue to get those numbers.

They can more accurately predict those harvest numbers from gun hunts vs. archery.

This is purely a guess though, only they know the intent of the use of the resource.

We did find one place they were feeding, but it was about 250 yards to the nearest blind in the middle of a pretty much open field. near one small tree. I don't know, it was still a good time......hunting at a different location. The park ranger was a nice guy and the scenery was nice.

Muse WMA is about 2000 acres.

Nothing like feeding animals to draw them to a certain location…. That is not known by the hunters that have to go to a predetermined destination…. Sounds like…. TPWD

That’s sneakier than some WMAs. There are several that have the feeders plenty visible, by the gate several hundred yards away from where the hunt unit starts.

                              It should change things
We as tax payers own these properties and as such our comments and feedback should be considered
If others have experienced the same then more voices together would have a greater probability of forcing change. Power in numbers
