    Side-by-side questions…

Search function keeps locking up on me…

I’m sure it’s been discussed before, I’m starting to look at relatively new, but used, side by sides.
Have had multiple ATVs, up to 500cc, my current ones are 2004 and 2006 models, time to upgrade. Need some guidance on what to look for / what to watch out for on a side-by-side. To be used around the lease or on two-track roads, no extreme usage needs.

    Needs:
4WD / winch / bed for hauling corn - gear - dead animals

    Open to suggestion:
    Brand
    Engine size (prob 800cc +)
    Couple or Three years old?
Hours (up to maybe a couple hundred?)
Miles (up to maybe a thousand?)
    Single seater vs double cab?

Let me know what you all have, like, dislike, etc

    Thanks!

UTV's and ATV's are something i'll NEVER buy used, unless it comes with a warranty. Too many people think their UTV or ATV is waterproof or "Mudproof" and dog the hail out of them without maintaining them properly. Keep in mind the frames these machines are built on are much thinner and probably much less corrosion resistant than a automobile. If you're set on used and it has Mud Tires on it, i'd run the other way. Mud tires tells me the person that owned it, "needed" mud tires for one reason or another and most likely had it submerged. If buying used, I wouldn't touch it unless they had maintenance records.

    My $.02

Get a crew. Go cam am or polaris. Try to find one w low hours no engine modifications other than maybe an upgraded clutch. Power steering is a must. Try to buy as new of one as you can. You’re asking good questions. I’m sure more people will chime in on here

If it's lifted and has a snorkel don't buy it. If tou need one easy to maneuver get a single cab

Mine is lifted, with big tires and snorkels from the factory. All I do is ride to the corner store with it. Just because it has those things doesn't always mean it was abused. Just look over whatever machine u are interested in very good.

I'm content with my single cab- 3 seat- Yamaha Viking 700.
It does all I need to do and am happy with it.

It holds its own well for a 700 IMO, will even out drag some 800's or so I'm told- never tried it.

Hours and miles- I'd try to stay as new as possible. Hours are deceptive because a lot of people like to idle their machines, others don't. Miles let you know know how far it's gone.
I'd try to stick below 1500 ish miles, you'll be adding plenty of your own.

My last SXS starting needing a lot of parts thrown at it at the 4500 miles range (but I was not gentle on it, no mud parks- but I didn't slow down for bumps either). I bowed out right over 5k for a newer model.

A front locker is nice to have when you need it. (some have, some don't).
A rear unlocker (turf mode) is nice for around the house work (some have, some don't).

If you stay single seater the larger engine isn't a must IMO.
Go double and it well could be.

As long as you stick with a name brand you've heard of before (and it doesn't look beat) you should be fine.
I'd be leery of the off brands. Just like with the kids Chinese 4 wheelers - better to spend the same $$ on a used name brand than new off brand.

Sure there are a few that had good luck with the box store special, but resale on those has got to be worse than name brand and parts acquisition used to be a problem- maybe they've hemmed that up? IDK.

I've went from 4wlrs to SXS and now have both.
If you don't have to sell your current quad to pick up the SXS, you might want to keep it around.
I sold off my quads then rebought.
It's nice to have back-up and options.

Beware of used side by sides that are priced higher than they were sold new. It’s a thing now. Even here on tbh. Be patient and find a great deal. UTV lots are filling up quickly so don’t fall for the “supply and demand bull****!”

I thought they called those trucks. They cost about the same.

We really enjoy our mule pro fxt. It checks all your boxes. It hauls a lot of people or stuff. Depending on how you have the bed set. We’ve had ours for 3 years now and it’s never been to the shop. If you buy one used I’d have to think they’re less likely to have been to mud parks and such. They’re just not popular to those guys.

Love my Mule Pro-FXT, option for 2 rows of seats or 1 row with a larger bed without having the extra long wheelbase of a canam or polaris.

I’m sure they are. I just can’t justify $30k for an off road only vehicle for myself.

I'd kick the tires on one of these if I was shopping.

They don't have to be pick-up truck huge to do some work.

Still expensive, true. But about half the $30k marker.

I’ve had 2 Honda Pioneers, a 700 and a 1000. For what you described about your driving needs, I’d buy a Honda 1000-5. They’re pretty much bullet-proof and no CVT tranny. They have a real tranny with dual clutches and 3 drive modes.
