    Water Heater Install

We are remodeling a mid 90's single wide mobile home. Needed a new water heater but the water heater is in a small closet with room for only one person. So I had to come up with a way to lift the water heater over the drain pan.

Maneuver the water heater into position. Lift high enough to get the pan under the WH and lower. The ratchet straps do all the work and allow a safe controlled lift. Everything else is scrap lumber with a few 3" screws.

I don't understand the purpose of a drain pan. Its tiny, what purpose can it serve?

There is a 1” connection from the drain pan that in my case goes down through the floor and to the ground below to carry away ant small leaks.

It can keep a water heater replacement, from becoming a flooring remodel too!

Listen what Dale said, that young man is wise beyond his age, it will save you from some major floor repairs with the drain pan. You are more than likely to have a slow drip instead of a gusher, so the drain pan does work.

A man does what he has to do to get the job done. I changed out the 50 gallon water heater that is in the attic. No help for me either. Let's just say that bringing that heavy thing down the stairs gave me three heart attacks and a stroke, but I got it done without tearing up anything.

A water heater only has 3 connections. Hot and cold connections and heat source be it electric or gas. It’s actually pretty simple.

It is simple but they tend to get stuck in some really hard places to work. I have a rent house, fairly new build, that has the water heater in a wall dead space between the living room and kitchen. You remove a bookcase to access it. It is sitting about two feet above grade. That will be a fun one to switch out.

I did one like that for a friend. Built skid rails down the pull down steps with some 2x4’s. Choked the wh with a ratchet strap and skidded it down with a come along.
