When I was of the age to do tough hunts like mule deer I used a 30 06, 265gr hornady spire points. In fact that was the round I used for all my hunting except small game.

.270 with 130 gr. Remington corlokts seem to work ok.

308 150 grain Winchester whitetail ammo. Killed an elk with it. All my Mulie Bucks have been bow kills.

I have shot 1 mule deer and it was with a 7mm-08 with 140gr. Federal Fusions. Killed it just fine.

My guess is you will get a wide range of opinions. I am pretty sure that any combination that is good for whitetail will be fine for mule deer.

7mm PRC w/ 175gr Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X is, to me, the best for all western big game.

A .300 magnum with a 185gr Barnes bullet is a solid choice, as well.

I shot my muley last month with the 7 sprc and 175gr Eldx @ 400 yards and he never took a step. My buddy that was with me shot his with a .300 win and 180 Barnes TTSX @ 80 yards and he had the same result.

If I were buying a gun specifically to muley hunt with, it would without question be the 7 PRC with 175 eldx for me. If I didn't want to buy a new gun, I would be confident with just about any rifle I own that is .25 cal or bigger.

300 WSM 180 gr- honestly just find a flat shooting caliber cuz they aren't any tougher than a WT IMO. You'll need to reach out for longer shots maybe.

I've killed more mule deer with my .240 Weatherby w/100gr Partitions or Sierra Game Kings than anything else. Works great. A .257 Weatherby or a 7mag or anything similar to those will be good deer rounds. I like AccuBonds these days.
