How long did you hunt a deer that wasn't there?

For most of us it was years. It took me a long time, hunting on multiple properties from all parts of Texas, Arkansas and Kansas, to reach the conclusion that to kill a big deer, you have to hunt where big deer live. Sure there are exceptions in every area but I spent a lot of time waiting/hoping on a big deer to walk by when one didn't exist in that area or region.

I guess its just a part of getting older and more experienced but I kinda miss those days before trail cams when I was a little naive and unrealistic.

The number one thing it takes to kill big deer is money unless you've had the land in your family or someone invites you.

A lot depends on your definition of a "big deer," hunting pressure, deer density and nutrition. With game cameras, hunters usually have a pretty good idea on what is there. However, the largest deer my wife has shot was a deer we never had on camera and was hanging out with a doe during peak rut.

But to us, a 'big deer' is 135+, and a monster is 150.

I "figured it out" while watching a Roger Raglin video. He said something to the effect of "If big bucks aren't where you hunt, then MOVE" "Be prepared to pay the price, whether it's money, time, or both" "If your goal is to shoot a big buck, then it doesn't make sense to hunt where they aint".

For the last three years I have hunted south Texas. Shot a 142", and two 150's. Had to pay a price, but it was worth it to me. I am in no way wealthy, but I have sacrificed to make it happen. It's worth it to me.

I put alot of thought into my set ups - quality blinds in just the right spots for the wind, sun etc. The only thing missing is the deer- I’m hunting deer that mostly don’t exist. Too lazy to move i guess

4yrs ago I hunted a 10 all season that was 4 maybe 5, almost daily pictures before and right at start of season. Never another picture but kept hunting him. Got 3 pictures of him again this year as an 8. Same deer, exact same unique frame.

Not me. I put a stupid amount of time and feed into finding and or growing a big deer. Then I hunt him. I don't waste time hunting unless I know he's there.

                      Big is relative though

We scout and pattern bucks , then we hunt them. We try not to waste time sitting in stands until that deer is getting regular during daylight.
There have been a few occasions when we sat and hunted a certain deer, for a few weeks or more, that never showed up only to find his remains after the season.

I grew up deer hunting in N La! I would say the first 20 something years of my life I was hunting where there wasn’t any deer!!

I’ve been chasing Da Turdy Point Buck my whole life.

Next season will make five years looking for this guy. He's been seen in real life twice. Once before legal shooting light by rancher and grandson. Once during the rut by a lease mate, moving too fast and too far away. Maybe next year...
