I have been cleaning up some skillets this past week
Daughter wants a dutch oven so I found one in the pile of stuff I have and the thought crossed my mind to post a thread showing how to clean cast iron with electrolysis
Setting up electrolysis tank is pretty simple, you need:
1) a container large enough to fit whatever you are cleaning
2) a battery charger (not the auto shut off kind)
3) something for an annode (angle iron, rebar, etc I am using worn out lawnmower blades) DO NOT USE STAINLESS AS IT PRODUCES SOMETHING TOXIC
4) Arm and Hammer washing powder (find it by the laundry detergent)
Fill your tank with water.
Add washing powder (1/2 cup per 5 gallons of water)
Put you annode in and attach + cable from battery charger
Next add what you are cleaning and attach negative cable. I use a piece of wire from what I am cleaning to a point above the water to attach - clamp.
Plug in charger and leave for a day or 2 depending on how rusted piece is.
If after 2 days you find it needs more, put it back in
Here is a pic of the dutch oven I am cleaning, I brushed the dust off. Lid went in first.
I will post more as it progresses.
