    High pH soil

Anyone have experience with high pH soil for their food plots? Looking for suggestions to bring it down and also any recommendations for something to plant. We have sent soil samples off with minimal luck, hoping someone here has advice, thanks

How high is ph? If it’s below 8.0 then you will be fine

Ranging between 8.1 and 8.4, we sent samples last summer off to Whitetail Institute and followed as close to their recommendations as possible. The soil is also very high in Magnesium, Calcium and Potassium which I'm sure is also a factor. 2019/2020 we planted fall food plot blends from Justin Seed Co with little to no success as well.

Sulphur Prills and when putting out fertilizer using Sulfate as your nitrogen source will help lower. On the sulphur prills you would probably need to put a ton per acre. High Calcium is not ideal either, applying a humic acid can help lower and help with nutrient uptake.

Glad I could help, I deal with this stuff on a regular basis, managing and owning a few turf farms for 20+ years. I’ve got low and high ph soils on different farms and use these with micro nutrients regularly.

Any thoughts on a fertilizer? Any place you would recommend buying sulfur prills?

I too have a very high PH. Question for anyone who knows, what is the effective difference between sulfur prills and sulfur granuales and which is faster acting ?

Martin Midstream Partners out of Odessa/Midland area they sell it by the truck load. It takes time to lower the ph, will not happen overnight. I would start out putting out about 300lbs per acre once per year till you achieve your desired ph which would be 7.0 ideally. Probably take 3-5 years to get there. No idea on fertilizer without seeing soil sample analysis.

Move to East Texas and you’ll never have high ph again !

                      Thanks again RMW

I keep reading there aren’t any deer in East Texas or I’d head that direction.

I would recommend using ammonium sulfate as your source of nitrogen to bring down the pH. In my area, I have typically recommended NOT using ammonium sulfate because our soil pH will drop too low fairly quick when using it.

                            Thanks for the info Wick

I believe lime raises the pH when its to low.

I thought Lime was used to raise pH? We have a high pH soil at our place as well. We haven’t tested the soil in a while but we still plant wheat, oats, and elbon rye every year and it does well anytime we get any rain.
