    Shredding the Pasture

Good morning, I am looking for some advice on shredding the pasture at the ranch. There are no cattle on the place just wildlife. Looking for advice on how many times a year and what time of year should I shred the grass in the pasture? Looking to keep the weeds down. Thanks for any advise.

I shred in August and January weather permitting. Im skipping this August because of the drought and fire hazard.

It's getting close to time for me. My good grasses mostly have seeded if they are going to seed this year. I try to get the blood weeds before they pollinate.

      I always mow high

If its got good grass might get someone to cut hay on it.

I know shredded pasture looks nice but weeds are of more benefit to deer than grass. I'd shred in winter when most of it is dormant.

This is what I do also. By September the weeds usually don't come back and it looks good all fall/winter.

There's a whole lotta cows looking for something to eat. If there's any good, or even decent graze, you could probably find a local who would love to graze it or bail it. Save yourself some time on the tractor and make a few bucks to buy pea gravel.

Yeah, one of my neighbors caught his pasture on fire and burned several hundred acres or more. If the wind would have been different I would have been screwed. Bet he never does that again.

                    x2

Western ragweed is a great plant for wildlife (deer and quail especially). Deer prefer forbs over grass.

Have someone bale it and help a rancher out at cost. Ranchers in a tough spot with this drought.

What are you spraying in the spring time?

                        Thanks.

The grass has gotten out of hand. It is giving too much cover to the coyotes. I think it is part of why i have lost so may animals in the past.

^^ This. Or spray Cimarron or Pasture Guard in the spring and shred in the fall.

I know you said your grass is so thick it is hiding coyotes, but depending on where your place is and how bad this drought is, you are inviting disaster if you shred. Hit a rock or wire on the ground and a spark will ignite an especially dangerous wildfire, considering how thick you said your grass is.

I’m in Milam county and I have skipped shredding so far. Need to get stuff prepped for fall but waiting on rain.
