    water trough/water tote transfer pump

I needed something faster and self-contained that didn’t require a gasoline engine. I was tired of forgetting hoses, pumps, battery etc. Now all I have to do is fill the tote and go. Nothing to forget.

The pump is a Rule 1500 bilge pump. It requires a 1 1/8” bilge hose that will move some serious water. Also I wanted to attach the pump to the bottom of the tote and still be able to remove it if needed. I had a half gallon pump up sprayer that was the perfect size for the pump to fit in. I cut the top off and cut a slit for the hose. I screwed the sprayer to an old cutting board that would serve as the base. All in all this seem to be heavy duty and something that could withstand tough terrain and water sloshing around inside the tank. Now all had to do was get this bilge holder glued to the bottom of the tote. First I used epoxy that ended up not sticking. Then went to window and siding adhesive that has worked so far. Hopefully the pics will make it easier to follow.

Everything fits inside the tank, power cord, hose, everything. Both power cord and bilge hose attach to pipe straps for easy access. Power cord is long enough to clamp direct to the truck battery. I didn’t want to chance a cigarette plug. Note all of this must be able to fit inside the 5" lid.

Good idea, I'd like to do this but to have it pump from a stock tank to a water trough to keep the cows out of the water and mud.

If you got hogs you better put something around that pvc to protect it.

3m 5200 is what you want to glue that down with if it comes loose. It isn’t that expensive and it won’t come loose again.

I have this submersible pump that hooks to my truck battery with an extension cord and alligator clips. Pumps a 55 gallon drum in less than 10 minutes. Can drop it in any drum or tote with a wide enough opening and it hooks to a water hose.

Very informative step by step explanation of your project! You are very resourceful! I also recently needed a pump for pumping water, but in the end I just ordered it on the Internet ...

Why leave the pump in the tote? Just hang a small weight from it and drop in when ya get there. Would be nice to have a 12v pump you could attach to the drain and let gravity feen the pump to other tote. Wonder if air pressure in tank would force the water out drain and to storage tank?

Thanks for the tip. So far it’s holding.

If I had a opening that big with no way to close I would loose halve my water before I got to my trough.

I timed pumping a full tote today. 275 gallons takes 19 minutes.

Pretty handy for sure. Just curious as to how often you have to fill up your reservoir ?
