    My Barndo Build

I’ll start by saying I’m in the oil field. 2 years ago when oil went to oh a dollar a bbl, I told myself I wasn’t going to live my life in fear of losing my job. I wasn’t in debt except for the house I lived in on a couple acres. The plan I came up with was buy a couple more acres and build a barndo and pay for it as I go. The only way I could do that was to do most of it myself. I’m a master of nothing but was raised to know a little of everything. I sat down with pencil and paper and designed it all myself. Every wall, doorway, plumbing fixture. This was going to be a basic, 2 bedroom, 2 bath house with a certain storage area I wont go into details on since its a public forum. Im a 44 year old divorced guy without kids, so my needs are minimal.

Sold my house July of 2020. I searched and bought 3 acres of solid pine, oak, and youpon. (I work 28 on 28 off, so on days off all I did was work sun up to sun down). Cleared a drive way and home site.

In April 2021 I paid to have the pad, and 40x 70 pole barn built.

Before the concrete was poured my dad, brother in law and I put in the underground plumbing.

Builders came out, poured the slab and closed it in.

That done, it was time to turn. This 2800’ sq feet into 1600’ of living space and 1200’ of shop.

    My Barndo Build

When I was building, wood was at its peak. I mean very peak. I researched how to save some money and since there will be no load bearing walls, I decided to do 24" center walls. I didnt want sheetrock sagging on the ceiling so that still had to be 16" center. First thing was to run ceiling rafters/joist (whatever the proper term is, remember Im not a builder). Then I'd frame the walls. On the exterior walls, right or wrong, I opted to run horizonal 2x6 for the sheet rock nailers. This is a pole barn, all the weight of everything resides on the 6x6 poles going into the ground. This also gives me 6" thick exterior walls.

Basic layout. I didn’t take many pics. 99% of the time I was by myself just working.

Then I ran power and pex. No pics here. Again I was working, not taking pics.

6” insulation in all the exterior walls.

A buddy does AC, so he and I installed that. I had aerobic system installed

Then I bought a Sheetrock jack and hung the ceilings and then the walls. I’m pretty good at learning and getting by on my own, but I knew I wasn’t going to tape, float, and texture, so I paid to have that part done

The back wall in this last pic is the wall between my shop and living quarters. It’s a 2x6 wall.

Didn’t get pics, but before they floated and textured, I put 10” of blow in insulation on the ceiling. Sorry for being out of order, I’m just looking through pics to see what I did next. The whole process was a blur.
I borrowed a spray rig and painted ceilings and walls. (No pics). Then layed the vinyl plank in bathrooms, closets, living room and kitchen.

Again, I know my limits, so I had cabinets built.

                          Installed (back ordered appliances FJB)

Stained wood for support beam and pole. Wrapped both. Decided to put power on the pole just because.

R and D came to do tub and shower

                            Looks great.

Any concern about the wood columns rotting over time or termites? I’ve seen several people build them this way and it has always made me wonder.
