HELP! Colored and stamped vs exposed aggregate.

    ok,
Any builders or concrete experts, please chime in.
Need some knowledgeable opinions. Since I am here, I will probably just settle for the opinions part!

Having my back patio (currently flagstone and pea gravel) upgraded.
Going to go concrete for the low maintenance of it.

It is not done much anymore, but I like the look (and relative non slip surface) of exposed aggregate.

Colored (throughout, not stained on surface) and Stamped is going to cost me $4,000 more. Contractor is pushing the colored and stamped and I admit, it looks good.

    1) pros - cons of exposed aggregate, is it durable (my guess is yes)
    2) pros - cons of C&S, how durable is it, will the pattern wear out in high traffic, how often do you have to re-seal, etc, etc)?

please help with the decision process.

We have had our stamped patio for 5 years and still looks new. No decolorization.

Yep. He did my house almost 20 years ago and I just recently covered it up with wood. Not because it needed it. It still looked as good as the day he did it.

Exposed aggregate sucks to walk on and is not as durable as integral color and stamping. Also, since it isn't done very often any more, most people aren't very good at it. And, you can't really seal it that well. It will start to look bad sooner and probably won't look very good new. The only pro is that it is cheaper.

I'd get regular gray broom finished concrete before I got exposed aggregate.

Integrally colored and stamped concrete will have the same durability as regular concrete. Traffic isn't going to effect the stamping or color anymore than it would in uncolored concrete. Their could be some fading over time for concrete that gets alot of sunlight, but that is the case for regular concrete as well. I'm not sure how often it will need to be resealed, or if it ever will need it, but again, it will be on the same schedule as regular grey concrete.

If you want to cut some cost on the colored and stamped, you could get colored and salt finished if your concrete guy offers that. Salt finish will make it irregularly pock marked and it should be about 1/4 the cost of stamping.

I’ve had stamped, stained floors in my house for 12 years now and they’ve held up well.

I agree 100% and will add if you decide to save some money you could do either regular stained or salt finish plus decorative saw cut.

I have exposed aggregate (30 year old house) and hate it. I wish there was a way to resurface it.

I have exposed aggregate and hate it also. It seems to be the thing to do around Waco and I can’t understand why.

We had a concrete patio that a contractor applied the concrete overlay that you would use for stamping but instead did a decorative cut/scoring followed by a sealant. Turned out nice and way cheaper.

Staining shouldn’t be cheaper than integral color.

I had Exposed aggregate done when I built my house.
Would Never do it again!! Regardless of cost.
                              Very hard on bare feet.
