    Elephant Mountain mule deer archery

Ok so who has been on this hunt? Do they do random draw for compartments or can you pick your compartment. Any other suggestions besides the normal get high and glass? Has anyone taken a camper trailer there or just tent camp?

I’ve read most all the past posts but always looking for more info.
Also just a roll call for who all has is on the hunt, we will be there the first hunt in October.

I'm in...but I'm no help. I didn't even know where it was until yesterday. [emoji16][emoji15]

I’m no help either. I hunted Del Norte section about 35 years ago We tent camped but a camper would have been supreme. We loved it, saw a few deer, lion scat and no javelina but it was still much fun. I just wish the hints were longer.

You’ll draw for your unit(s), or you’ll draw to see who gets to pick their units first. You can bring a camper as well, the camping area is big with lots of camping/parking spots.

I was on the rifle hunt earlier this year. There were myself and another pair of hunters that were together that were actual drawn hunters. The biologist asked if we wanted to draw, or let him place us. We decided to let him place us. I got 2 sections, and they got 2 sections. Their's was larger than mine since there were 2 of them. I was in the NW sections. I don't remember the names (I think one was Del Norte, and the other was maybe Kirkpatrick), but it was unbelievable! There were other hunters who were standby hunters who drew for the rest of the compartments. Definitely a once in a lifetime trip. I know the time of years are completely different, but when I went in January, back in the mountains is where I saw the vast majority of animals. Best of luck to you!

I did the archery hunt last year, and weather had a big effect on the hunt, and made some compartments better than other. When the weather finally broke, i saw some does and a non legal buck but that was it. Other compartments saw more. I left on the last morning as i had a 13 hour drive home, i heard after the fact someone shot one that last morning, but i can't confirm that. If so, that would have been the only arrow flung on our hunt. I stayed in town which was about 30 minutes away

Like most hunts the weather will be a big deciding factor, I’m just hoping for some decent temps. October can be hit or miss. We are planning to stay at wma, not sure if we will drag a camper yet or not.
Gonna be a great trip either way and really getting excited.

TxBowHntr: I was there for the "standby" but was not selected. Hope you did well.

I rifle hunted there in January 2017 and scored. Awesome place with tough hunting. Definitely hope to get that one again.

As far as facilities, I tent camped there in 2017, and it was COLD & WINDY. But I was able to sleep warm. In October you will probably be Okay for temperatures. Don't know about the wind, though. There are nice picnic shelters.
As for hunting, again, bowhunting is gonna be different from what I experienced. The rut was full on in January 2017; find the does and you'll find the bucks.
For October, I don't know. However, if Dewey is still running the hunts there, he is really cool and very helpful. Pick his brain.

My son got picked on youth hunt in November 2013. The camping area was nice, but if a front is blowing it will be windy. The shelters are large enough to put your tent under them. No shower, only a composting toilet. We hunted the North Eastern two sections. There was a stock tank near one of the roads that had solid deer tracks and we saw a lot of deer including whitetail in that area. The weather got bad with rain/sleet/snow and low 20 temps. Found a 6 pt bedded down and son decided to end the hunt and shot the buck in his bed. It was definitely a hunt to remember and I hope to go back again someday. Another kid killed a nice 10 point on the same hunt. The staff their is super helpful and want hunters to be successful.

I am getting pumped, crossing fingers to also get a selection on the rifle hunt, would be great to get to scout in october and return in January with rifle although if I had my preference I'd rather kill with bow.
If it stays hot and dry I would assume sitting near a water hole would be good mid day but curious when most deer hit the water. I'd rather be spot and stalk early and late but just wondering if it would be better to continue to glass midday or make a blind and sit water midday.

Before the weather got cold and wet, we saw deer heading to the water in the morning before going to bed and also early evening before feeding. They also used it at night.

                          Kactus:

The cool thing about this hunt is that even if you score on the archery and get drawn again for rifle....you don't use your tags from your hunting license. So it's possible to shoot 2 bucks (archery and rifle) and STILL have the mule deer tag in your pocket.

You're gonna have a blast, either way. I LOVE that place!

As of bow the weather is looking like 70’s and 50’s, hope it holds. Gonna start making a list to pack for camp.
Been battling walking pneumonia the last month so not as in shape as I wanted but working on it. I’m ready to get going. Been wanting a mule deer hunt for a while even tho I know getting a shot at a shooter is gonna be tough.

New member here. I was drawn for this hunt (November 11 through 14), and came looking for information (I've browsed most of the other threads from past years, but figured I should post here).

I plan to camp and hope the weather cooperates!
