    Live.... Shredding Operation

After a long period of second guessing myself, we went ahead and started a shredder operation on my hardwood section of my place in Polk County today. I had considered doing a select timber harvest at one point, but concluded there was not enough marketable timber to make it work without a full on butcher job. I also considered fire, but some of the block was too thick and some too thin (I was afraid I would kill my big hardwoods in thick area). So I contracted a local operation and this little machine is angry at the Yaupon and Sweetgum!

I will send more pics as we move along the creek. I also budgeted a day to expand some shooting lanes and firebreaks on other parts of the property.

Those timber mulchers are cool. Had one at my place for about 30 minutes till it broke.

Awesome! Interested in doing the same.

              Few questions:

              1. Of that yaupon type hardwoods, how much can they clean in a days work(thinking of total $$$$).

              2. Also, wouldnt a dozer be more cost effective?

That looks like Bill Andersons machine....is that who you contracted? If not do you mind sharing the name of the contractor? We are thinking about doing the same in some spots on our lease where the second growth has taken over the cut overs. Looks real good, keeps the pics rolling.

Dozer is going to damage the ground more then that rig, plus mulch from the yaupon is going to do some good.

Not sure on his cost..i had some quotes a few years back...2K for 2 machines for 8 hours each.

these leave nothing but mulch..no stumps and trees to burn later..when they are done..it is done

But in an area with oaks and similar sized trees a dozer maybe the only option correct?

Do these cut/shred along the top of the ground? What is the thickest tree they can cut?

I want to do this to some of my place also.
Are you concerned about yaupon re growth?
I have started poisoning it to kill it in certain spots.

It is so much easier on the hardwoods as compared to a dozer. It costs more, but he is ripping through the Yaupons. I am having him cover as much ground as possible and if I have loot left I will have him do some finese stuff.. Still lots of shredding left.

I am using Matt Hughes out of Corrigan. Very happy so far.matt's number is 936-635-7249. Please tell him you got his number from Brandon on TBH. He charges between 125 and 150 depending on the job (thickness and area)

Don't get me wrong... There is debris left behind... But it is a lot cleaner than a dozer!
