Default James Daughtry Lodging?

My son and his buddy drew Youth Javelina for early February. I have been calling down there to see what options there are for lodging, but can't get anyone on the phone to answer. So, I figured I would reach out to the Green Screen to see what those of you who have hunted there did for it. What say you, are there any cabins for rent in one of the nearby Parks, or is it only tent or pull a trailer? Also, do they allow you to bring a UTV? Any help would be appreciated, just trying to make this as enjoyable as possible for the boys, especially since their other hunt didn't go so well.

The WMA has a camping area you can use. Pretty minimal but it is conveniently located to the ranger station. We stayed in Three Rivers once at a “well it’s better than sleeping in the truck” hotel. Last year we stayed at the hotel in Tilden. Much better. Max’s Cafe in Tilden has great burgers. Perfect place to go after the hunt.

Max's cafe is great. Depending on the compartment you draw, Choke Canyon Lodge
is a great place to stay. It could be a small distance away, but this place has everything.

We stayed at the WMA camping area a few years ago. If I remember correctly there was no electric or water but they did have a port a potty for our use.

Choke Canyon Lodge is by far the best place to stay in the area. They're really nice people, and it's a quality place. The Down side is that there are a lot of bass tourneys that time of year, and you need to reserve in advance.

I have stayed at Kickin Bass Cabins a couple of times (closer to Three rivers but not a bad drive) and Tilden country inn in Tilden.

Kickin Bass is a lot nicer but is more expensive. Tilden Country Inn was plenty good for me and my boys the time we stayed there.

Good luck on the hunt.

When my son drew down there we stayed at the Bass Inn in Three Rivers. Was the closest place with availability.

I almost died of the motel coodies at the Bass Inn west of Three Rivers but that was 2012. Maybe they have remodeled since then.

When we hunted there we stayed in the state park. They have cabins to rent that are pretty basic but they were warm. They have three bars if remember correctly (we took a cot along for the fourth in our group). Restroom with showers within walking distance. Watch out for the coons, they will steal your food. Put something on top of the cooler you have with food in it. They opened a latched cooler and took the hamburgers we were going to have for supper one night. If you have a compartment by the lake it’s not a bad drive.

Awesome, TBH never fails to give help. I will look into these options, hopefully no tourneys that weekend. Anyone else have anything, just trying to cover all bases?

The Lodge in Tilden has cabins for like $40 a night cash It is located on hwy 72 about a block from the main intersection in Tilden. WMA doesn't allow utvs unless you have a disability.

Stayed at the Lodge in Tilden last year and at some cabins right by the Calliham unit entrance this year (cant remember the name). Both were good and reasonably priced $50-75 a night...

The place with cabins we stayed at last year was Grand Eagle Ford Lodge. It’s right in Tilden. Not bad at all for the price.

Bass Inn lodge will get you the scratchies. Last time I stayed there you stood on top of the plush shag carpet - reminded me of an 80’s hairspray stiffener. It was so nasty always wear shoes. The sheets seemed to move on their own. Maybe better now?

I've stayed in one of the cabins at the Calliham unit of the state park during a Daughtrey draw hunt. It was great. Fire ring to cook dinner (bring your own firewood). Cabins have electricity and beds with mattress (bring your own sleeping bag and plug-in heater). Restroom with shower was 40 yards away.

My son and I stayed at Texas Inn and Suites for one of his youth draws. It was great as well. Agave Jalisco is right across the street and had good Mexican food. And cold beer.

Ryno Lodge for the best stay in considering accommodation, price and location.

Tilden Lodge for cheap, no frills, and location.

Both have all you need- but beware Tilden Lodge may put you in a room with light bulbs out, no heater, no oven or small fridge- tell the man at the front desk, Sam, you want all of those things in your room. Have stayed there for about 3 weeks accumulatively. Bring your own cook pans, or items to bake makes an easy quick no hassle meal- pizza, premade meals from Sam’s or HEB, even soups.

My favorite part is hunting down there is Agave Jalisco in Tilden, which is better than the Three Rivers locations.. fantastic food, dirt cheap and big portions. Notable items- Big Texas Breakfast or Carne Guisada & eggs breakfast, Jalisco Quesadillas or street tacos, & Barbacoa.

The state park cabins would be likely for fun for “camping” they boys can see some wildlife mid day or at night, have a fire and do marshmallows and s’mores. Grille out! Gotta bring your own gear from bedding to cookware. Tent camping without the tent pretty much.

Ice machine at Tilden is the cheapest ice. Don’t buy corn at gas station for $16 a bag, get it at the feed store south end of town or bring it.

No UTVs. 10ply tires would certainly help but it’s maintained. You should be fine. I hunted there 19 yrs ago on a youth hunt when I was 16. That’s what got me addicted to it.

If you stay there be sure to call ahead and tell them to unplug all the scented plugins, I stayed there and my camo reeked of Lavender something or other and ruined my bowhunt there. Whoever prepares those rooms must have little to no sense of smell the fragance smells were STRONG in the rooms.

Must be a tourney, most of the good ones were booked already. Ended up renting a cabin in the state park, close to a restroom. It’s ways to the unit, but Javi hunt should be fairly laid back. Don’t see getting there 45 minutes before daylight, just paint the road’s yellow and wait.

We had thought about trying for standby (about 50/50 on it). I sure hate to book something ahead of time without knowing for sure we'd get to hunt. I'll kick it around and decide on what to do.

Good luck on your hunt sir!!!! Hopefully the javelina cooperate. Glad you got your lodging squared away.

Let me know if you come, we’ll have to meet up. Talked to the biologist yesterday, he did say they leave some spots open for standby, you may try to call and check. He said our boys will share a compartment, hopefully we get one with some decent roads. I bought a tailgate feeder and plan to corn the roads good.

We use choke canyon cabins right at the entrance to Calliham.

Melissa is awesome, the places aren’t fancy, but always clean, and comfortable!

I've stayed at the Texas Inn, it was good and a short drive away from the HQs with plenty of places nearby to eat.

There had to have been 100 cats living in the parking lot though, lol..

Finally got the email on Monday from the biologist, check in is at 10 on Saturday. We swapped over to the private cabins that are outside of the state park, they are much better. More money, but they are equipped with more comforts and even covered parking. Should be a fun hunt, can't wait to get the boys down there and get them a stink pig! Hope to see a few of you down there, if you can make the stand by drawing.

It's disgusting how poorly managed James Doughety WMA is. I've never seen so much destruction by pigs and so many pigs just everywhere, yet very few opportunities offered to kill them.

They’re legal game on the Javi hunt. These boys have itchy trigger fingers, so some may die this weekend.

Went to a management hunt at Choke Canyon in December. Stayed at the cabins at the park. There were 4 of us guys. Brought a cot to go with the 3 beds. Worked for us, we were hunting all day and cooked burgers and steaks at night. We were hunting the north side of Choke Canyon, it was a bit of a drive back to the check in station if you killed something. It had to be taken back there. All deer had to be weighed and checked for CWD I think. Fortunately we were able to check in and out of the hunt area by text to the biologist if you did not make a kill on a deer. It was fun, first time to hunt south texas area, a learning experience for sure.

Nice, hope we have luck too. I’ll do a live thread, as best I can. We’re going for a fun low stress hunt for this one. Their hunt at Hill Country was not very good, with the neighbors interfering and ruining the boys hunt. Want to finish with a Bang, and make some great memories.

This week has sucked! Been iced in since Monday afternoon, then the manchild got a stomach bug. I’ve been giving him all sorts of medicine and fluids, sure hope he’s better by tomorrow morning. Murphy seems to have a knack of kicking me in the junk lately. Fingers crossed, but his hunt still happens.

Not looking good for Mini Bush, sitting in the ER. His pain got much worse, so we brought him in thinking he may have appendicitis. Appendix is good, but he has a stomach virus that caused his lymph nodes to swell and result in lots of pain. Hopefully my buddy and his son will still be able to go, I really hate to miss this. At least he’s going to be ok, and it’s not worse.

Dang I hate to hear that. Hopefully your boy bounces back quick. I took my son on a hunt (TYHP hunt) and he got really sick on Friday night/Saturday morning. Ended up not hunting and coming home. Same as your boy he ended up in the ER. Bad stomach bug and he got dehydrated. I.V. and meds helped him bounce back.

I'm not going to go on standby. Got asked to work this weekend. I'm still new here so I said yes I'd do it. Not a biggie though I can use the overtime money.

I'm letting him and mama sleep in, he was able to sleep the rest of the night without getting up in pain. He was on an IV for a few hours and some pain meds. Still keeping some hope, but just don't know right now. Just talked to my buddy, he and his boy are going regardless. Sure hope we can go too, hate to see him miss out on this hunt.

Well, God is great! He woke up feeling like he never was sick. He’s on his third meal ( didn’t eat at all yesterday. A little queasy in the gut, but doing great overall. We’re going to give it a go, I’m bringing everything I can think of, including the meds his Dr prescribed.

Well, that was short lived…. We got about 30 minutes from home and it hit him again with a vengeance. Had my buddy turn around and take us home, and picking up a prescription now. Fingers crossed, we may try to get up really early tomorrow and drive straight down. Otherwise, I’ll be waiting on reports from Robert and his son.

Thanks man, he's on the rebound Dr just said to give it time. Weird stomach bug, he never got sick or diarrhea, just lots of pain and nausea.

I'll let Robert give the story, but shots were fired last night... no recovery. They are back at it this morning, and I'm anxiously awaiting a great report.

Guess Robert is catching up at work this week. He shot one Saturday evening, but it ran late to some thick nasty stuff and was still alive. They waited a bit to let it die, but it was gone when they went in for it. Next morning, they saw a lot of animals but couldn’t seal the deal. Sounded like they really enjoyed the hunt, but came home empty handed. I haven’t heard if any of the other kiddos got anything, sounded like there weren’t many there.
