Every US soccer play was standing / hand over heart for the National anthem.

Hard to believe and refreshing!

Yep, it would be interesting to see if the U.S. brought their best athletes trained as life-long soccer players, but soccer is gaining steam here with MLS and college programs on the rise.

Politics aside these guys have represented well on the field and in the press. Hoping they stomp Iran in the dirt today. USA USA USA

I can't watch soccer very often because of the flopping, but I can get behind a national team for some world cup against terrorists.

The women's team can go to hell.

Qatar can go to hell. They built the entire infrastructure for the WC literally, with slave labor.

Most people who hate soccer don't understand it, and their only crutch is "iTs Tooo slOw"...

Those guys are the elite of sports, other sports players couldn't last 45' on the pitch. 6-10mi per game.

Yes the flopping is bad, but they are just gaming the system. Don't tell me football players do fake injuries to stop momentum or exaggerate pass interference.

I still think soccer would be better if no offsides. If someone wanted to cherry pick you simply have to cover him. Can you imagine football or basketball where the ball could not be thrown if the recipient had the audacity to outrun the defender? Heaven forbid more goals would be scored.

I think he is right on concerning the US. That was his point. To quote Lewis Grizzard, “Soccer is for the kids too wormy to play football.” :-). Elite soccer players are in great cardio condition. No doubt. I think there are a ton of NBA players, as well as WR/DB/RB who would be elite soccer players if they played/focused on the sport. I don’t think many soccer players would be in the NBA or NFL if they had focused on football/basketball. Kevin McHale and Bill Laimbeer (sp) would have been great goalies. :-). We know Hakeem Olajuwon was a great goalie—he just didn’t wine as much as McHale and Laimbeer.

And soccer players wouldn’t last two plays on an NFL field, or be able to compete at any other majors, zero. That’s a bad argument. No other sport on the planet can come close to the ridiculousness of floppy soccer players….but basketball princesses come closest.

He's not wrong in the US, the soccer stars we put up all couldn't hang in the other sports so they end up playing soccer. The rest of the world, well none of them are good at football or baseball to start with so of course soccer is popular. lol...

These arguments are completely stupid. A NFL player wouldn’t last on a soccer field, an NBA player couldn’t last in an NHL game, and world champion gymnast Would do terrible in a professional basketball game. And I GUARANTEE you, about 99.99999% of TBH wouldn’t make it any professional sport so let’s continue to discuss elite athletes from our couches.

I know nothing bout kick ball but seems to me there should be a fence around the field to help keep the ball from going out of bounds so much.

He will be just fine. A little magic spray and good to go. Best $5.50 in the training world.

$5.50
Cold Spray is the Magic Spray that Instantly Treats Injuries

Cold Spray is probably most well known as the magic spray that athletic trainers apply to soccer players after they are injured on the field. Within seconds a gruesome injury seems to go away right before the fans very eyes and the player is right back in the thick of the action. This product of course is not actually magic, it is in often nothing more than an over the counter aerosol cold spray that you can buy off the shelf.

A ton of American arrogance and ignorance on display in this thread instead of what should be there which is American support on the worldwide stage. Sometimes it is better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought a fool than open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

Tough game. Should have put more in the back of the net in the first half when given the chance.

No sir. I was waiting to watch it in its entirety tonight without interruption. :-).

Yup, that will hurt. Was simply a joke about the ridiculousness of guys flopping around like they are shot and then they get a puff of cold air on them and they are magically fine--other than RBF. It truly is magical that its efficacy seems limited to soccer players.

You soccer boys get so defensive about the game. Laugh about the laughable. Enjoy the game, but you have to be able to laugh about the magical properties of cold air.

They have ball boys and girls to provide a spare ball. No different than any other sport. No nets to keep the ball in for Basketball, Football or Hockey.

There's a reason that scoring a goal means so much. It ain't easy. How excited do you get when your basketball teams scores their 47th point out of 90? You're lucky to get a clap out of most people for that. Score in a World Cup soccer game and its party time. Hockey also has offsides and score lines are similar.

As for those who think soccer is too slow, I guess they prefer to watch a sport that has a 60 min time limit, but takes 3 hours to complete, cause, you know, that's not slow . For every minute of "play time" you get 2 minutes of not play time . And don't get me started on "actual playing time" (11 minutes). Carry on. Go USA. Let's take out the Dutch next

A lot of truth there........lol!!!! I just enjoy sports that are competitive and this is definitely tough. I never made it to elite level but always admired the guys that outweighed me by 30 pounds that ran faster, jumped higher and had the ability to pursue a dream. Congrats on getting out of this round......but the strategy may need to change against the Dutch.

Congrats to Team USA. Not a soccer fan, for all the previously mentioned reasons above and more, but proud of USMNT for representing and beating the Iranians. The same reason Basketball is huge here and continually gaining popularity around the world is the same reason “Soccer” is the most played sport, worldwide. All you need to play is a round ball, period. Most of the worlds population is below a proverbial “poverty” line and what better way to escape the barrio than excel at a sport that pays $$$, yet costs almost nothing to get started in.

Having said that, Ted Lasso is probably one of my favorite sports sitcoms, ever.
