Ferrari is showing out! And great job by K-Mag. What a drive (not so much in first practice today tho) Might have to become a Haas fan this season.
Also nice to see the Mercs struggle as a team. |

He took a little bit of time last year to get used to the McLaren, but he seemed to be doing better with it by the end of the season. Not as good as Lando, but better than he was doing.
I know that everyone has new cars this year, but look at Perez and Russell. They are right there with their teammate. As a Ricciardo fan, I have to say I'm disappointed. Not sure what happened with Kevin Magnussen today. I know he had issues with the car in FP1. Might have hampered him in FP2 as well. Hope he can get it sorted and is back in the mix. I'm ready to cheer on Haas as well! |

While FP1 was coming to a close, the Aramco oil plant 12 miles from the track was hit with missiles. FP2 was delayed for 15 minutes. And everything is carrying on as normal at the track.
I don't think I would feel safe. https://www.crash.net/f1/news/999410...despite-attack |

So, from the previous article, it appears the TEAM PRINCIPALS agreed to continue the event. The drivers are currently in a meeting of their own, deciding what to do.

After 4 hours of meetings, it looks like there's a stalemate and no clear outcome. As it stands, they are still racing.

Free Practice 3 ended with LeClerc fastest, followed by Verstappen, Perez and Sainz.
I know FP3 isn't the best indicator of all out speed, but it was good to see Magnussen in 8th. Gasly in 7th!! I heard them talk about Mercedes planning to "turn up their engines" for qualifying in a couple hours. ![]() |

Perez takes Pole Position in a dramatic Qualifying session.
Hamilton was knocked out in Q1 (first time since 2017). Schumacher had a high speed crash in Q2 which brought the session to a stop for about an hour. Perez, then LeClerc, Sainz, and Verstappen. Both McLarens knocked out in Q2. ![]() |

What a fantastic race!! So many great battles throughout.
Verstappen wins, followed by LeClerc, Sainz and Perez. Perez actually had a great start, and Verstappen got by Sainz on the opening lap. The first several laps were very clean by all the drivers. There was a great battle between Alonso, Ocon, Bottas and Magnussen around lap 10. Such great racing! On lap 16, Perez and LeClerc played the “undercut” game, and it was actually Perez that ending up pitting from the lead. Which was unfortunate, because Latify caused a Safety Car on the following lap, which gave everyone else a “free pit stop.” Except Hamilton and Magnussen — they both decided to stay out on their current tires. The closing laps were such a great battle between LeClerc and Verstappen. Max finally got by Charles and was able to hang on to the lead in the last couple of laps. The new regulations are definitely working this year. Amazing racing / battles throughout the field. It’s great to see such close racing. |

RB 1st, Ferrari 2 and 3!!! Incredible race at the front. I think Australia race will be telling as others should have cars figured out. Ricardo, Tsuando, Hamilton, Alonso, Bottas all still having car tweaks.

So I had to leave around lap 20... and avoided the web just in case something popped into the feed....
I was not at all expecting that finish! And yes I like the Alonso/Ocon battling it out... I can only imagine what was happening behind the scene radios... LOL |

Las Vegas will be a night race on a Saturday in November.
Austin is usually in October, so I wonder if it will be after Austin, or after Mexico City. Not sure if the attendance numbers at COTA will be affected that much. Drive To Survive continues to bring in lots of new fans. |

I predict the Austin race won't exist on the schedule in 2023, and certainly not it the fall calendar spot if it its. Texas doesn't want to be subsidizing that expensive race anyways.

I am curious, what does the state subsidize with COTA? They host a number of big events every year outside of F1. I would have thought they were operating in the black.

It supposed to bring larger events to the state and in turn bring more business and be an economic stimulus. I don't think they are able to claim all the tax revenues either so the state still get something just not as much. |

The Ferraris were fastest in FP1:
![]() LeClerc was fastest in FP2, followed by Verstappen, then Sainz. The Ferrari F1-75 is defintely fast. I heard or read an interview with Binotto this past week, and he made the comment that he's not sure exactly when during this season they will "turn the engines up." So they're not even using all the power right now?!?! Holy crap! ![]() |

Tough break for Perez last week - He keeps this up and those breaks will start falling his way.
Was worried that DR would overshadow Lando on McLaren, but if he doesn't pick it up, he may be on the outs. Not sure about his contract situation. |

Danny Ric..... Always been a big fan. I've heard arguments that his driving ability is overrated, etc. I disagree -- in the past, maybe he wasn't quite as fast as Vettel (while both were at Red Bull), but he wasn't too far off. I know he had that win last year for McLaren, but he does seem to be struggling overall with the McLaren. He is under contract with McLaren until the end of 2023. I hope he gets more consistent with Lando's performance very soon. |

During FP2, they did a helmet cam shot from Sainz. The car started porpoising pretty bad and it seemed pretty violent the way it shook him up/down. Last edited by F1addict; 04-08-2022 at 05:16 PM. Reason: How do I embed a YouTube video in my post? |

A lot of action in Qualifying! LeClerc ends up with Pole Position, with Verstappen and Perez right behind him.
Norris and Ricciardo both make it all the way to Q3!! They both have seemed to find some pace in their cars. Q1 saw Latifi and Stroll collide, which caused a red flag until all the debris was cleaned. It was confusing for me, because Latifi let Stroll through, thinking he was on a fast lap. Then Latifi started speeding up for his fast lap, catching Stroll pretty quick. So Latifi goes for the inside on the right, since the racing line Stroll should have followed was much further to the left. As Latifi is passing, Stroll moves over on him and they collide. I think it was miscommunication from the teams -- Stroll should have been warned that Latifi was coming up, just as Latifi moved over for Stroll as he passed. Alonso was really quick throughout Q1 and Q2, but lost hydraulics in Q3 and crashed out. Sainz struggled with his Ferrari, as did Hamilton and Russell in their Mercedes. Both the Ferrari and Mercedes are porpoising a lot. The difference is when they hit the brakes to change direction / take a turn -- the Ferrari is very solid, as if the porpoising doesn't affect it changing direction. Where as the Mercedes isn't as solid in the same scenario. It was after either Q1 or Q2 where Hamilton said that he would put in a lap that felt really good, only to look at his time, and he's 1.5 seconds off the pace. Should be a great race tomorrow. Can't wait to see the battle between Ferrari and Red Bull, and see how McLaren and Mercedes fight back. ![]() |

Yes, but it was minimal. I don't think it was nearly as pronounced in any of the cars as it is in Melbourne.

LeClerc drove a brilliant race. Perez had a good finish with second. Russell and Hamilton were gifted 3rd and 4th from Sainz and Verstappen.
This is Verstappen's 2nd DNF in 3 races. All mechanical failures. McLaren finished 5th and 6th! Lando, then Ricciardo. Great to see them with some pace again. 13th and 14th for Haas. They really seemed to have lost pace. |

Well, mist has been said. LeClerc is definitely showing he belongs. Riccardo is definitely struggling. I like his personality but he is not consistent yet. Lando is definitely focused in. Gasly needs a break, the kid is good. Mercedes-Benz better get that porposing crap under control....it is ugly!!! Verstappen is peeved with 2 DNFs.......I can't blame him. Aston Martin and Haas are totally out of whack......I expected them to deaux alot better this year.

It's RACE WEEK!!! This week is Imola, Italy. It's also our first Sprint Race / Qualifying weekend.
All times are Central: Friday, April 22nd 6:30am - Free Practice 1 10:00am - Qualifying for the Sprint Race Saturday, April 23rd 5:30am - Free Pactice 2 9:30am - Sprint Race Sunday, April 24th 8:00am - Grand Prix Ferrari has decided NOT to bring their engine upgrades to Italy, instead waiting for Barcelona, Spain. I'm certain Ferrari will be quickest. But I have a ton of questions -- How bad will porpoising be on this track? Will Red Bull be able to tame the reliability monster? Can McLaren keep the pace as last race? Has Mercedes gained power since the last race? Should be a great weekend! |
