Lead and lead more until they duck/dive. Then back off a tad.

Wind was blowing tonight so my normal IC needed to be a mod.

Idgaf about Deer. I dove hunt for limits

Ignore the red that was for someone else

This and keep swinging as you shot. If you lead but stop to shot you will be behind. I sling my gun as I shot like slinging corn on the ground. Helps me from stoping as I pull the trigger. I don’t hunt dove like I used to but one box of shells is all I needed to limit back in the day. Also, shot all year long not just when dove season starts.

I really don't think about it but I don't lead them all that much but I shoot a full choke when I'm shootin my 12 gauge which I do most of the time. Of course the further out they are the further I lead them. I keep track of how many birds I hit compared to how many shells I shoot. On average I hit 1 bird for every two shots I shoot when I use that shotgun. When I switch to my 20 gauge using an improved cylinder then my average goes way down because I catch myself trying to shoot them further out or I'm shootin behind them. I can get them a ways out with that 12 gauge using a full choke. When Eurasian doves fly in my percentages go way up because they're slower.

Basically the only way I can explain the lead I put on them is it's basically like I'm trying to shoot them in the head. The downside to the full choke is the close ones get mangled up pretty bad sometimes. Last weekend my buddy shot one ( he uses a full choke too ) and the only thing left to it was wings and chunks of meat and feathers. That thing exploded. I shot a pigeon from about as close as he did that dove and it's beak was the only thing left up top and it was hanging a little lower than normal.

How much you need to lead depends entirely on your follow through

Relax and enjoy it first. Swing through the bird and keep leading through the shot. Ambush shooting a bird (putting your gun up and waiting on the bird to cross the sight picture is generally not a good recipe for success). As with most things just takes practice. Clay pigeons or skeet or whatever its called in your area are cheap and cheap to shoot to practice. A few beers is a must to help you relax.

Why would anyone want to shoot a bird that represents peace and love?

Skillet shots work well too and saves ammo.
