    Don't shoot yearling spikes

I remember this yearling spike from last year. He had a really distinctive coat. He wasn't grey like all the other deer. He was golden brown with a lot of really bright white on his belly and legs, and he had a really white throat patch and white circles around his eyes. Note the white front knees.

Here's a pic from this year of a 2.5 yr old buck. I'm 99.9% sure it's the same buck. Not a monster, but a nice little young 8 showing promise after his first spike set of antlers last year. Sure is a pretty hide.

I think its the same deer as well.

The other spike looks like he has some melanistic genes.

Same buck. Never understood why people continue to shoot young spikes. We wouldn't have many bucks on our place if we shot spikes. Some of them spikes have grown into impressive deer as well. Great example.

I concur... Big time! We haven't shot a 1-1/2 year old spike in 11 years and never have mature spikes. Yeah, we kill some crappy deer (relative in the eye of the killer) that are 3.5 plus, but we never see any spikes older than 1-1/2. Let em walk and see what happens.

Well dang, my boy just hammered a spike. I'm with u on development but first year didn't impress me. The eight pointer did.
