Is a 70-200 2.8 adequate for shooting deer during an aerial survey? What about a 70-200 4.0? I also have a fixed 300mm 4.0.

I have a 70-200 2.8 that is perfect for 15-30 yards for deer. 40 yards and over is too far IMO, I also got a 1.4 teleconverter that I use from time to time that works pretty well. I've never been in a helicopter for a deer survey but I would imagine having a 300 or 400 would be ideal.

It really just depends how close you’re getting to them.
The hard thing about anything more than a 300mm from a helicopter is trying to find the deer it’s so zoomed in and your moving so much.
To me 200-300 is good as long as you’re getting up on top of them. If you’re shooting during the day a 4 won’t be bad. If it’s during the morning you’ll want that 2.X.
