In 2017 I shot one at 7 yards with a recurve (U.P. of Michigan). One year I had one climb my ladder stand and got within 4' of me. He dropped back down and I shot him as he was walking away.

real bad juju...It is a violation of law to kill a black bear in Texas, with penalties of up to $10,000, added civil restitution fines, jail time and loss of all hunting privileges. Keep hunting camps clean to prevent odors that will attract bears.

Had one under my feeder in Sterling Co a few years ago. Bout 3/4 the size a a Rottweiler dog. Daniel Freudenthaler a TBH member visiting from Austria was hunting with me in the blind at the time. Mexican bears are not very big but they can destroy varmint cages is seconds. I replaced mine with cages made from shopping carts. Had no cameras running at the time but fixed that in case it was ever seen again. The ranch has several great pyrenees dogs that guard the sheep now so we probably won't ever have a bear problem again. This one just this past Oct. might be the same one we had just north of town. https://www.newswest9.com/article/ne...5-9085340bcc89

PS: I weren't skeerd. Daniel was with me and I knew I could outrun him.

He/she is pretty relentless! Friday when we got here we drove down to the bow blind to unload and he was here and ran off. He had hit the lock on the feeder winch and it was down on the ground with the lid off. Yesterday morning when he came win we watched him for ever till he started walking off. Fired off two shots in the air hoping to scare him out of the area for at least a little while. Nope, he was back yesterday afternoon. In the stand now, guess we will see if he comes back this morning. He sure has my deer spooked!

I have U bolts on all my feeders that donít have automatic brakes to prevent the feeder coming down if the lock is tripped. In my case I had it happen with either coons or cows, no bears here.

Less than lethal rounds made for bear deterrence are available for shotguns as well.

Just got home. Today was even better! When we got to where I park, my sons target buck was hot on a doe about 400yds from the stand he spotted us but the doe didnít. She keep moving generally in a closer direction. The buck soon followed her. Not knowing if they would come to the feeder or not (traffic had been really slow) we opted to jump in the rifle blind and Tyler made a awesome 200yd shot. Last nights picture download showed the bear was at the feeder when we arrived and 30 mins after we left. The warning shots did nothing. So Tyler really wanted to bow hunt so I gave him the green light on a doe for this morning. Good thing because thatís all that came in. About 8:00 he decides to go ahead and shoot. About 3/4 draw I catch movement to our left. Yup the bear is inbound. ďYou better hurry, bear is comingĒ. Tyler shoots his doe making a perfect heart shot and she runs 30yds out and falls over. Now I have my ar with me and this time when the bear comes in, Iím going to shoot 6Ē behind him till I canít see him anymore. One thing to note about bears, they donít get in a hurry. 30 mins of watching him or her IDK, he is slowly circling the area. Heading in the general direction of the doe on the ground. Tyler even made the comment that heís going to get my deer. I honestly didnít think so. Anyways he gets closer and itís obvious that is exactly where heís going. Iím sitting with my ar at the ready but really curious what heís actually going to do. In my mind heís going to go sniff her and he may start licking the blood and then Iíll shoot and he runs off. Nope. He circles her and get to the head, takes one very short sniff and grabs that doe and takes off!!! The doe looks like a rag doll flopping around!! I shot 3 rounds before he let go! Drug her 15 yds. I did continue to shoot behind him as he ran off. And then proceeded to laugh our butts off. It was the craziest thing Iíve ever seen!

Needless to say brought home a extra barrel like in my feeder and will be building what I hope is a bear cage this week. I will also be looking into the non lethal shotgun rounds.

For those that have asked this is Val Verde county out by the Pecos river.
