Assume a whitetail will duck when shot at.
Aim low, which could likely result in: a heart shot (if no movement), a double lung (if deer ducks), or a clean miss (no wounded deer) if you're a bit low, a friend recently suggested.
Target: 8.5x11 sheet of paper, folded in half long ways. Draw a horizontal Sharpie line 2 inches up from the bottom of the page and draw a dot at the intersection of the line and the fold. (See sample below.)
The shot: The dot will be your aimpoint from 12 yards (6 for kids), any stance, for the first shot of a day. Measure nearest part of shaft to center of dot. But there's a twist -- a shot ABOVE the line is doubled for its adjusted distance; shot touching or below line is counted normally as its actual distance. Off the paper is a miss. The winner of the next call will be the one with a single day's closest adjusted-distance shot to the dot.
Trying to discourage a high shot due to deer movement that may wound with no recovery
Up to four days tries allowed (not required). Good luck, and have fun!
