That’s what I thought too. Had many pics of him and had even laid eyes on him. I shot him yesterday and his teeth tell a totally different story. Really kinda got me down as I thought I was taking an old buck out of the herd. I have passed lots of really nice 3 and 4 year old bucks to kill this 6pt that I thought was post mature.

He’s standing on his tip toes, good sign it’s a young deer

It just goes to show ya if you don't know the deer it's so hard to tell. Body weight changes so much from velvet to now. Not all deer have to be 200 lbs to be mature. It's a guessing game

It is a guessing game but he was way too old for those horns. Those teeth are not worn bad but that doesnt mean much to me.

You didn’t hurt the herd any that’s for sure. Looks like he is saying “Beam me up Scotty”.

My first guess was 3, no white around the eyes. All that protein went to his belly, not his horns, I guess.
As Lynn, manager of Sugar Creek Hunting Club would say, "just needs some more protein and another year" on anything I showed him. LOL

Any manager that advises to give that deer another test is an idiot.

I agree, that's why I'm not on it. LOL

I'm looking at the neck on that dude and it just screams "mature" to me. Heck, even if he was only 3.5 that's a crappy set of antlers for a buck that age given the range conditions this year.

Those night pics can be very deceptive for aging. I agree with other posters on here though, nothing wrong with removing that one from herd, enjoy the venison.

How big were the bases of the horns?
