I'll finally be heading up to our place this weekend.

Upper 80's doesn't sound miserable and will probably be covered up in sheep and pigs as usual. Will be somewhat of a work week also

Got here to our place in San Saba yesterday evening. Saw a couple of small bucks. Acorns raining down on the carport. This feeder this morning has corn under it from a couple of throws. Seen a doe and fawn so far. Gonna have to get out on some trails and hand corn. Piggies must not be around if corn on ground. Sure could use some rain. Its dry dry.

Activity around my feeder on my cellular trailcam has slowed down a lot over the last week. Acorns must be dropping.

Dad has a buddy that gave him an antelope tag in the Panhandle, so I'm going up there to join him on his hunt this weekend. We'll get after the axis and whitetail later.

Got a few pretty nice ones coming in. That big gnarly deer will be something special in another 2 or 3 years.

Just got back from our place in San Saba county. Hot & dry! Put out a roto guzz waterer & bought a new blind. Hunted morning & evening. Not much hitting feeders right now. Acorns covering the ground & trees still loaded with them. Protein feeders still over half full from Sept 1st filling.Turned corn feeders down to 2 seconds. Pigs not even hitting feeders hard. Gonna be a tough bow season, but great for the deer. After the summer turned hot & dry, the deer can get in great shape for winter & the rut.

Boys still running together. This next full moon should start the first rut. Fawn mortality rate could of been better. { this happens every year - us older managers always hope for a good fawn year }
Turkeys have disappeared. May be years before I get a hunt able population again.................

I'm about to head down to the least today in search of this guy. Not many deer are hitting the feeders but I hunt near a lot of acorn trees in a creek bottom they should be near.

Not much movement tonight but I did find the other side of my target buck that was in the pen this whole time...I've searched almost the whole 200 acre pasture for this shed and it was covered up by grass this whole time 15' from my protein feeder!

I wish, he came in on cam around 2:30 am. I have yet to even see a buck which rarely even happens at my main blind. Another lease member has been down here since last weekend and has yet to see a mature buck yet, mainly just does with their fawns. We need some cooler weather and rain badly.

His rack last year scored 131 3/8" including his large base kicker he broke off at some point. I'm thinking he will be close to 135" this year at 6.5 years old.

I have only been seeing the same doe and fawn for every hunt along with cows. It's been extremely slow so I'm switching to a new spot this evening.

Just got back from San Saba. Movement is almost non existent during the day around feeders. I didn't see a deer while in the stand all weekend. Acorns are beyond thick on our place & feeders aren't seeing much activity. I have them set back to 1 or 2 seconds. Even pigs are not coming much right now. That's ok ,because at least the animals are getting in good shape for the winter after the rough summer they had.

Got 2 AT&T cameras going. Big movement between dawn and 9:30 in the morning. Big boys filling their stomach. Seeing pigs at noon, and a small deer movement around dusk.

Now is the time to be hunting. I would be in a bush this morning but the stupid xbow I bought here is in the second shop in a week to be repaired. Hope these folks get it going.

Hunt now............................................... ................

Not sure where you are located, but we are in SE Mason County and had 0.7Ē average across the ranch. Farmlogs showed 0.9Ē, but unfortunately we were a little under that.

About 75-80% of our Deer, Sheep, and pigs all but vanished with the acorn drop....

Hunting sucked. But was able to get the finishing touches done for the season as far as blinds and feeders are concerned

Nice evening last night after the wind died down.
It was really still this am. Buddy was covered up in bucks. I had a lone doe. Almost sent an arrow but you could see her ribs. Thought she might be nursing so she got a pass.

Lots of acorns in the shin oaks still.

Dad and I weren't planning to hunt this weekend, but we decided to head down to the lease to hunt the cold front. It was ON!

We saw loads of whitetail and axis. Saw the first fallow we've seen on our place - a big chocolate buck. We got rained out from the hillside we were hunting Friday morning, so we were driving out of the place about to head to the feed store. Dad told me to stop to look at a sika standing broadside about 60 yards away. Our landowner's only rule is don't shoot sika, so Dad didn't shoot. I couldn't really see him through the rain on the window. I rolled the window down and instantly said, "Fallow! Shoot him!" just as the buck ran into a bunch of trees. It was a big chocolate fallow - same color as a sika. Dad couldn't get a shot. I got my gun out just before the buck was running toward a small opening. I shot as he flashed through it, but missed him. DANG IT.

But the story ended well. Dad got a really nice axis this morning - his first big axis buck. He's been wanting one for a few years, but he spent most of the 2017 and 2018 summers in the hospital and couldn't hunt the rut. When he did get to hunt, he seemed to always have bad luck with axis. It all finally came together today. We watched several whitetail, axis, and a big sika come in to the feeder. We were in my Krivoman blind that's set up for bow hunting. Dad had his .257 Weatherby. His shoulder won't let him draw his bow lately.

The big axis came in and took over the place. He has one side that's super long. The other side has a huge caudle, but the main beam is a few inches shorter than the long side. Dad thought about waiting to see if one of the other bucks that is a true giant might come in. I told him it was his call. I REALLY wanted him to shoot though. I've been doing everything I can do over the last 3 years to get dad on a big axis. We've had several really close opportunities that just didn't work out. I wanted him to get a big one - BAD. But I tried not to pressure him and let him decide.

He decided to shoot. He eased the window open, and I handed him the rifle. He eased it out the window, and a whitetail that was about 12 yards away saw the movement and spooked. All the other deer jumped and ran off a little ways. The big axis didn't spook bad, but he jumped about 10 yards away. Now he was at 30 yards and quartering away. Dad put one through the near side shoulder, through the heart, and out the front of the offside shoulder. The buck just about hit the ground but regained his footing and stumbled a few yards into the brush and died right next to the road nearby. No dragging necessary.

We finally had his trophy axis. That's a good day right there. A little over a year ago I didn't think Dad was gonna make it home from the hospital. God answered a lot of prayers though. What a blessing to be able to hunt with my Dad again!
