Dumb question but how do you keep deer from stepping in the traps?
I'm really wanting to get into this but always had that question. |

When you say throw a trap do you mean it set the trap on its leg and then got out. I assume maybe the deer is strong enough to get out of these size traps. If so is there usually any damage left to the deer. I know these are hypothetical questions but on our lease I don't think they will take to kindly to limping deer just because I wanna try my hand at some trapping. If you feel it's more a rarity than a more common occurrence then I'd be willing to get into it. We definitely have a coyote problem. |

I just got a Duke #4 for a coyote problem that I have. I have leveled the pan and night latched it. What else should I do to prep it? I have read that you can wash it in dish dawn and then spray paint, boil in baking soda, or soak in vinegar and water? What is the green screens recommend way to get theirs trap ready.

Thanks BK.
It’s a lot of work, but every coyote I catch makes it all worthwhile. You & BT would probably have twice as many coyotes if either one of you guys were trapping here. |

I don’t believe that at all but thanks for the compliment. I caught a cat and a coyote today. I didn’t get pics because the ranchers found them first. Worked out well for me though. I went and did some gun trading and picked up a Ruger 77/22 hornet for my daughter. ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Btoutdoors; 12-03-2017 at 09:02 PM. |

It starts with a four foot Ketch-All pole Dale.
It’s plastic coated cable is self-locking, so when I pull the noose tight it stays locked until I release it. I slip the noose on the cat and cinch it down, then lay the pole on the ground and stand on it while I compress the trap levers with my hands to release the jaws. Then I pull the spring-loaded release and cut him loose; and pray he doesn’t run up my leg. ![]() Seriously, all the cat wants to do is put as much distance between the two of us as possible. To help persuade the cat to run the opposite direction, I usually put a small bush or clump of grass in between the cat and I before releasing him. The whole process takes about twenty seconds. The cast trap jaws are smooth and offset , so there’s no foot damage to the cat. |

I am real basic compared to these guys. I will trap for about 2 months a year and end up with about 7 or 8 coyotes, 5-6 foxes, and a bobcat or two. I just go to cabelas or the old gander mountain and buy traps. I do nothing to them. I bought several anchors off of the internet and really like the pogo anchors now. I lost a trap with a rebar anchor. I dig a hole, tear off a piece of a black trash bag for a pan cover and cover it up. I put it off a trail about 2 feet and put some dog droppings behind it. I may throw a branch or two or a cactus to the sides to make them come straight in.
I tried a hole trap once and caught a rabbit trying to go into it. I have not had a problem with deer. I watched a deer jump and not get caught once when he stepped in it. Mine are off of the trails, but a buck has been beating the trees around one of my traps recently. There are a ton of videos on youtube to get started. I just got back in town so I need to reset mine today or tomorrow. |

I have a question. When I flesh then board my raccoon skins I wipe off the skin daily to remove excess oil and grease that comes out. Even when I do this though the skins still come out pretty greasy relative to a fox or bobcat pelt. Is that normal or is there a technique I’m missing out on?

Got another yote on my domestic dog dropping/coyote pee set. I set it up on Monday night without any care to be scent free. They are just dumb in my area.
I had a question for you pros. I have some old foot traps that are not offset. They are the exact same size as the ones I am using. What do you think about taking a grinder to the inside of the jaws to make them offset? I would assume I would need to round the edges a little when I was done so they aren't sharp. How much should I take off each jaw? Honestly is may be some hardened steel that I can't grind down. I don't know. |

Welding a tit seems a lot easier than grinding down both jaws.

So is a 1/8" offset what I am shooting for? Without looking at the traps I would have guessed the offset of mine was closer to 1/4".
