Does anybody know if they are requiring the proficiency test this year? Can’t find a for sure answer and didn’t want to bother their office but I may have to.

I just sent an email to Kathy over at the Hagerman office asking for confirmation on whether or not the proficiency test is required this year. I'll let yall know if/when I get an answer.

I was wondering the same thing and have an email in to the refuge.

A bowhunter education course is very different than an archery proficiency test.

The 2019 regs on the refuge website list both individually.

The currenty 20/21 regs only list a bowhunter education course as a requirement as shown in the pic CentralTXHunter posted

Correct. I was just reminding folks about it. If you did draw and havenít completed a course, there are very limited courses being made available between now and the hunt.

It means you didnít draw. Drawn applicants have 10 days (until 9/11) to buy their permit (or accept on free permits). If some donít buy/accept then a 2nd draw happens. Your odds depend on how many fail to follow through and are incredibly low.

Basically donít get your hopes up.

Where do you see that you can't use crossbows on the first Friday of Seg A? I dont hunt with an x-bow anyways, but dont see any mention of it in the regs. I got drawn for seg A.

Because in Grayson county crossbows are only legal during general season.

You are not assigned a unit in Hagerman. You will he told which units are open and you can pick from any of the three open units. This year is the Harris units Big Mineral unit and Sandy unit.

Oh, I havenít been lucky enough to hunt Hagerman yet. I figured they would assign units to avoid big jams of hunters in small areas

What really sucks is that they don't do stand by hunters... so everyone who put in for it without reading up on it and got drawn, but doesn't have their bow hunters ed, will get booted and the spot is gone, so thanks for that...your lack of attention to detail cost yourself and another dedicated hunter the chance to hunt the H. Also i know for a fact that in the multiple H posts on here it has been stated dozens of times that the proficiency test isn't required. learn your lesson, and please for the love of god start reading the instructions. annoyed.

Gol-durn you guys are hard-headed.

No proficency test required this year, although I wish there was. I don't agree with it- but I don't make the rules.

Per the Hagerman staff, the normal mandatory in-brief on Thursday morning will be replaced by a Zoom meeting (or similar).

Tentative- We will be adding a PRIVATE BH Ed course for ONLY those drawn for the 2020 season, afternoon of 19 September 2020 at the Hagerman refuge. I still have some research to do, hopefully posted this weekend.

that may be difficult to be in a place with good connectivity for zoom, then at the gates for stand placement right afterwards. I do get the potential issue of breaking fed rules by gathering a bunch of people in one place for the orientation though.

The zoom orientation will not be on the Thursday before the hunt. It will happen in October. You can also request a written document for the orientation and then email them a confirmation that you have received it and read it. Kathy should have sent emails to all of those that were drawn and it explains everything in detail. It may end up being a CF on the Thursday before the hunt but most of us that have hunted there in the past know the rules and how the hunt is conducted.

Maybe Kathy is waiting to see who will pay and after a second draw, but I have not received an email yet on orientation.

For those that need the Bowhunter Ed course for Hagerman. We have scheduled a private course (field day only) for Saturday afternoon, 19 September 2020. It will be conducted at the Hagerman Refuge, and reserved for the drawn hunters. Limit will be set at 20.

As a reminder, you will need to complete the online portion.

PM me your email address and I'll respond with a link to the course as well as pertinent information.

Just a PSA. You only have three days left to pay for your permit!!! I went online and paid mine. I never received an email I owed money or that I was drawn if my B I L had not looked online we would have missed the deadline!! We will be there God willing!

Scouted all day yesterday...... Lots of pig sign, like everywhere! Found a few maybe spots but nothing that looked like a homerun! I did find one spot that had rubs galore but it would kill me to try to drag a deer out of there. Did see 4 deer on the hoof and jumped one buck that made lots of crashing sounds (antlers on brush) as he departed very quickly!
