    What is this contraption?

Not sure where he found it but dad sent the pic .... says the round pieces are ceramic. I think first pic may be upside down.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Maybe a piece of a rain chain from a gutter?

Yup. First answer. Thanks. That was an easy one.

So, more insulators for higher current lines, I guess?

We call them dead-end bells, or just bells. Those are probably 50 plus years old.

                      Higher the voltage

I think they’re good for 1kV each, I’m sure a more knowledgeable person will chime in on capacity per insulator.

I think I remember seeing that in an adult novelty shop somewhere.

                            Insulators, as others have said

I have several of those. My husband retired from GTE / Verizon. I always thought there were several reasons behind doubles, triples, and quads. As mentioned, higher voltage, but also heavier lines. They weight the lines to keep from vibrating between poles. And the number of bells tells the lineman the range of volts.

The lowest line on the poles are telephone lines and are basically non hazardous. The higher the lines, the more volts = more danger.
