This was going to be the year for my 8 year old daughter to finally get the chance to shoot her first deer. We have been hunting hard trying to get the right deer in the right spot. She had an opportunity Thanksgiving weekend, but just missed a big doe. Well Saturday morning we had a doe step out in just the about the same spot she had previously missed. She didn’t miss this time. She shot her grandpas savage bull barrel 223. She’s a lefty just like her papa so it was a no brainer to use his rifle. At 40 yards the Barnes 55 grain bullet did the trick and she dropped dead in her tracks. The excitement kicked in immediately after the shot. She was shaking with “buck fever”. I killed a monster buck the evening before (see thread in game management forum), but was probably more excited watching her kill her first deer. She is hooked for life. I’m sure she is going to be my trigger woman from here on out. She even followed it up Saturday evening with getting (2) javelina. Both of them dropped in the road. She’s a natural. Now we are chasing her first buck which is a tough task on a S Texas lease. Most of our old management bucks are to big for her first buck. I do have a big 6 pt that needs to cooperate that fits the bill. I just got home from a awesome weekend that both of us will never forget.
